A sure indication of a timing belt "jumping a tooth" is a distinct misfire. According to how far the belt has "jumped" will determine the severity of the misfire. I've never had it happen, personally, and have only heard of one or two other instances in my three years of hanging out with these boards -- and, as you can see by my post count, I hang out A LOT.

In short, the car will run very roughly.

I had a timing belt stretch after about 30k on my suby wagon - at least thats what the tech said it was - he didn't say it jumped - only stretched out. The car developed a bad knocking - I thought I had spun a bearing. A new belt fixed it. BTW - it was a suby belt as were all 5 that I have put in that wagon so far.

my timing belt was actually out of sync when i bought the car and i never knew it, it wasn't until i brought it to my new mechanic that he found out. the only difference in my car was speed. wasn't bumpy or anything like that. he said that the last time it was changed, they did a bad job

I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

Hi Kienan.

I think that Blake did his own timing belt and I think that there is some other component (water pump????) that is advisable to change at the same time due to the work involved - someone will be able to correct me/advise what that part is.

I noticed when it was starting that it did seem to be a bit rougher - I thought Blake you and I were chatting about the plugs or something.

Needs a good fang to clear it out - oh...Australian boxer engines get a lot of carbon build up due to our fuel - may be worth having a look????
