Ok, body experts, is this car totaled?

It seems an elderly woman somehow managed to drive into my neighbors parked car just now, and pushed it about 25 feet up our street. Tim, my neighbor, and a fellow network member, is very attached to his Legacy, and is devistated at the thought that it may be totaled. We moved the car into my garage since the rear hatch glass is broken out of it. I figured I would post some pictures and get everyones' opinion here about the damage. It's a 95 Legacy LSi AWD with 170,000 miles.

My guess would be yes, it is totaled with that damage and the miles on the car. I am not a body person, but the damage is pretty bad and is on 2 sides of the car.

I'm going with totaled also....it really comes down to what the repair will cost versus how much the car is actually worth....I'm guessing that due to its age and the 170k miles that the repair will far exceed the book value of the car.
For your friend's sake, I hope I'm wrong...

There is a huge difference between totalled and unfixable, it looks very fixable, but chances ar that it will cost as much or more than buying a replacement, so by the insurance company standard of totalled I'd say yes, it is totalled.

If he really wants to keep it then do all the dissasembly himself and locate replacement parts so all the body shop needs to do is what they do best, body repair

I think this car is totaled as well from the insurance standpoint.

But I think it's fixable. It looks like it's drivable and no any drivetrain hurt. It's fixable....in my opinions, cheaper way to get it fixed and back to the road would be find your friend a same color hatchback door, a same color bumper and even a same color rear quarter panel....if you can find another same color legacy wagon with a serious head on collision, you could probably buy that for cheap. Make 2 into 1 and get some money to part out the second one. Ohh you will save even more to get this car back to the road also if you have some good connection with the body shop.

I would agree with the statements about fixable. If he buy it back and does what has been mentioned before, he could get it on the road again. It is really an unfortunate thing to happen when he was not even in the car. I would try to find another just like it with less miles and she could buy him that one.

My poor car

Thanks for the inut guys, I looked up the value of the car and its 5885. I really hope I can get this thing fixed. My one SVX was parked right in front of it not 2 hours before it happened, but fortunetly I decided to take it to Erie or it would have been plowed into also :-(

I do have a friend that ownes a body shop, I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I imagine that if they could cut out the quarter and weld in a new one, fix or replace the bumper and replace the hatch, shed be as good as new, but I don't know. I'm crazy about my car so IT MUST live on :-)

Thanks again guys.

Tim

Tim, I'm sorry to hear that it happened, but at the same time I'm glad it didn't happen while you were in the car.

A car can always be replaced, a person can't

Best wishes,
John

Hmm... technically speaking, anything's "fixable." In this case it looks like you're talking major unibody bending; in other words, repair will have to go well beyond simply bolting-on replacement parts. For example, you can see that the driver-side cargo bay liner has popped loose from the crush inward, and the hatch opening is certainly deformed to the point that you couldn't just hang a new liftgate and expect it to close. This could be repaired by a skilled hand, sure, but for how much?

I know it's not a good comparison but as a reference, changing the rear quarter panel on the SVX alone costs CAD$2500. (about USD$2150)

That is similar damage as what our Outback had when we got it....here is a pic of it during the repair...

And here it is once it was repaired...

Of course it had only around 65k on it then (130k now)
We've had zero problems out of it...
Installed a used hatch, right rear quarter, and rear bumper, and right rear quarter glass....got all the parts for $500...and labor and paint was in the $1500 range, but I have friends in body work...

We could fix it for $3,000. ( which exceeds the " value" of the car), unless you factor in the "value" placed on it by the owner!! Insurance companies only care about how little they can pay to get out af a fair settlement. I fought for the 91 legacy with similar miles, and got $2,400. for the car and bought it back for $200. this was just over 1 1/2 year ago..

The best way to fix this unit is with a full 1/4 'clip', . you hang a new hatch on it, and put the quarter on, and make necessary hammer adjustments, till it all falls into place, add 'mig' and some bondo, presto!!

Not QUITE as easy as it sounds, but CAN BE DONE!!

( i just noticed the damage on the r front!!) Looks like you and your friend need to get some practice with such things, or take the money and run! We can still put it back together for 3 large, but you get it back in PRIMER!!!

I also noticed the 'limited' wheels! They look good on any subi!!
