gotta leaky tranny, where to start.
Just picked up my SVX and on the way home I stopped after a 250 mile freeway jaunt and found smoke billowing out from under the car. Of course the sensible thing to do was to pull it away from the gas pumps and grab my important stuff out of it before it burst into flames..
turns out it was a fair amount of tranny fluid that leaked out and was smoking on the headers and Cat. it looks like the whole bottom of the tranny and cats are wet, as well as the drip tray under the radiator, although it is not wet under the radiator where the tranny cooler should be so I don't think it is the cooler. for the rest of the trip home I found that if I had the cruise at 70 I didn't have much smoking, if I had the cruise at 75+ it would smoke. I stopped every 100 miles or so to top off, but didn't even get though a full quart of ATF over 1000 miles. It is hard to see under this thing, so I am hoping someone could point me in the right direction to look. I suspect I am 1. overheating the tranny and blowing fluid from the breather. 2. Have a leaking seal. 3. Have a leaking hose. I picking up a chiltons guide on the trip just in case, but that POS is only good to hold the drips, it doesn’t say anything. Hoping someone can say, “hey, look here!” |

If you are sure it is ATF,
Then it is most likely to be a leak from one of the trans cooler hoses, that run down the left side of the engine to the cooler. Not too big a problem.
Welcome to the forum, it will be more help than the Chiltons. Harvey.
