Ring & Pinion help needed

I am in the process of swapping a 4.44 ring onto the svx LSD carrier. My problem is that I cannot find a way to loosen the eight bolts holding the ring onto the carrier. How did you guys secure the carrier so you could apply enough torque to loosen the bolts? How tight do they need to be when re-attaching the new gear?

My AllData CD claims 51-58 ft lbs.

I used an electric impact wrench to break them free, so not much help I guess. Putting them back on, used a helper to hold it & that was enough.

Impact wrench huh? I will have to give that a shot. Just to be sure, these bolts aren’t reverse threaded are they?

Compatibility
So far we know that a 1997 Legacy Outback 4EAT W/4.44s, a 1996 Legacy Outback 4EAT W/4.44s, a 1996 Impreza Outback 4EAT W/4.11s and for SVX-FF, a 1996 Impreza 4EAT W/4.11s are plug and play. The only changes we had to make were to replace the spedometer sensor, (right side, just behind the bellhousing, screw in 17mm) and to install the correct rear differential. To make the axles fit, and to have the same ratio front to rear.
(As far as we know the 98 will PROBABLY work but ...)
The correct rear end MUST have bolt on side plates, (5 bolts per side) And you have to use the correct size driveshaft flange. As in make sure the replacement rear driveshaft flange is the same size as the one from your svx, it's 3.75. Other details are only a pm call away. I BELIVE the 99s and later will require more work, but I have not researched this, and could be wrong. So, this is what we know now. Tom

Mine are from a '97 legacy outback. I think '96- '98 legacy outbacks will work, as long as they have the 2.5 L engine. You should probably do a search for 4.44 gears just to double check. I remember getting really good info from one of Chike's write-ups.

Heres and old r&p trick. Take your diff and stick it in an oven. Heat the assemby to about 400 degrees. Take it out while wearing good oven mits. While the assembly is still hot, removed the bolts. They will come out with no problem. This also works for installing the ring gear when the bolts seem to be a little too big. Only then, you heat the ring to 500 deg.
