Hey Bill,
I picked up 8 quarts of Valvoline ATF and a 32oz bottle of Lucas 80/90 diff fluid. Per a later post in this thread, it seems like the rear diff holds 0.8 qts so that's all I'll need. Funny, my local Advance Auto only had one bottle of the Lucas on their shelves as well... -Chike Quote:

Having fully embraced the metric system (and having always had problems converting oz to quarts - I'm only good to 4 qt = 1 gal), I actually have 3 of the 32 oz bottles - they had two shipped in from another store. -Bill p.s. having now found a couple of great web sites on conversion of measurments, I now know that 32 oz = 1 quart So, Chike, sounds like you'll need some for your new front diff?

Doh! I forgot about my front diff completely...
I'll see if I have time to pick another bottle up, if not, Mike said there's a parts store near his house. -Chike P.S. Don't forget to bring the bleeder for the brake lines. Quote:

Is synthetic Diff fluid Blue/purple? I looked at my front dipstick last night and the stuff was that color and smelled rather rank...I think its time for a refill...

Bill,
I think I'll have time to go back to Advance Auto after work and get another quart of diff fluid. I may just return the Lucas for two bottles of Valvoline since that product is also supposed to be good. Since the rear diff holds 0.8 qts, and the front 1.2, I should be okay with just 2 qts. -Chike P.S. Whoru - I'm not sure what color it is, but I'll definitely know after tomorrow!

Don't bother, I'll just bring all three bottles. The bleeder I used for my brakes belongs to a friend of mine (i.e. I don't have it). Suggestion -- get an empty glass jar and a long length of clear tubing (1/4 inch -3/8 inch dia, maybe 5 feet long). We'll have to go with the "pump the brakes, hold it, tell me right before the pedal hits the floor" routine... -Bill

Thanks. Mike would probably have a bleeder come to think of it... Harry says he has every tool & gadget imaginable!

I can testify that the ATF and dif fluid really really should not be mixing - those were expensive seals!

Should mobil 1 really be used in the LSD? I thoguht those needed some amount of friction to work. I want to change out my diff fluids but I'm a little hesitant because of this.
I have Mobil1 ATF in my tranny, and it's been there since I got the car. so I can't really compare it to anything else.

Actually, limited slip additive adds slip to the system when compared to normal diff fluid. That's why you sometimes read (on this forum) of people recommending adding limited slip additive to tranny with the transfer case binding problem.
However, adding it to the tranny for "just-in-case" would not be recommended by me because it will also increase slip in the clutches and bands as the tranny shifts. Back on topic: I've had M1 synthetic diff fluid front and rear for about 30K miles now with no problems. |
