By "Main" vacuum hose, are you talking about the PCV hose. If so, just change the PCV valve.

Now, are you the one with the loose manifold? If so, tightening it might help things a bit.

Once you've gotten the manifold tightened, and the PCV valve replaced, do a search on "throttle body cleaning" and find step by step instructions on cleaning the TB.

PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. You can find a full description of the system here:

The PCV valve should be replaced regularly. It's inexpensive, but difficult to get to. Here's a diagram showing how the PCV valve attaches to the manifold. It's item number 2 on the diagram.

Actually, the PCV valve is quite common. They'll probably have it in stock. I bought my last one from Autozone. They're not that difficult to get. They're just difficult to install. Check the "How To" locker for instructions.

Just curious - if the PVC valve is scuzzed enough to create idling problems, why hasn't the "check engine" light come on?

Ron.

Beats me. Perhaps the problem didn't change the right values in the right sensors. One would also think the CE light would come on if too much air was entering through the manifold (ie loose screws), but, perhaps since it' s bypassing the MAF sensor, it doesn't register. I really don't know. Just thinking out loud. Kinda like when your tranny poops its pants, and it's "mechanical" you don't get a power light. Only if one of the electronically controlled components fail, will you get the "flash" and the codes.

Sorta' like worrying about box cutters & nail files, when it's easy to stow a nuclear device in the hold of a cargo plane.

What a country!

What I hated was the story about the 80 year old lady who was not allowed to board an airplane with her knitting needles. They were afraid she'd knit an Afghan.
