Question Exhaust Noise Re-visited

Both my '92 and '94 have identical exhaust noises. I concentrated on the '92 because iut also had a leak. I have replaced the leaky pipe (left front cat') and all new gaskets. I have NO leaks now. I also relaced or repaired all of the heat shields so they are not rattling.

I have heard that there is an internal baffle that breaks loose and can cause this noise. Noise occurs at part throttle, mainly light acceleration. It goes away at idle and half + throttle.Noise is definitely near center of car.

I have listened with a hose and can not be sure where noise is coming from, definitely internal. Does this baffle problem occur in the Y-shaped, 2-into-1 cat' or in the first silencer just behind it?

heat shields

Most of the bad heat shields were on the primary cat' that I replaced. The pipe comes with all new shields, for $360! The remaining shields were OK except for one of the welds on the U-piece. I put a layer of fiberblss heat shield beteen pipe and shield and it bolted up tight and no vibration. I don't know how long it will last but it is not rattling.
Ken
p.s. It is a little scary laying under an SVX on jack stands with motor running and car in gear and all 4 wheels spinning with wife blipping throttle to make the noise !!

Oh, yeah, that wouldn't look suspicious.

Lots of nice postings but I was hoping somone had an answer to the original question. Whcih of the two boxes is known to make the noise. The 'Y'-shaped cat' or the first stage muffler?

The resonator is known to be prone to make the noise. I guess you may call it the first stage muffler.

Thanks, a real answer to my question. I'll try it on one car and see if it works.

The Y-cat heat shield made noise on my car.

I replaced my "2 into 1" cat with an aftermarket, with just straight pipes in front of it. It rattled like crazy. Dynomax sent me another one, and it did exactly the same thing. So I welded in some glass packs right after the o2 sensors and BINGO, no more rattle. It sounds absolutely unbelievable now.

emissions??

Stephen
Have you stopped at your local emission test facility lately? It would be good for us to see the results.
