Serious RPM prob!!!

Today i was driving and i noticed that my car shifts from 1- 2 ok, but 2- 3, it just revs and doesnt shift unless i let go of the accelerator and then it shifts. It goes all the way to 5000 rpm and then i let go, then it shifts and this is at 80....anyone have any ideas?

i have the same exact problem, the transmission is out apprently, mine runs and shifts 1-2 but 3 it will not pull at all, mine also shifts at really high rpms but i suggest not running it that hard otherwise your 3rd will go out like mine did, i am no expert, just what happened to me.

sounds like your trans is slipping like a banshee. when's the last time you changed the fluid in it? when's the last time you had it looked at to make sure everything was in the correct adjustment?

might want to do the "sniff test" on the fluid - pull the dip stick and give it a smell. If it smells "burnt" you should get it changed ASAP.

ok, i checked the dipstick and it smells burnt..

i am going to change the oil tomorrow and also change the front and rear differential oils. Under the dipstick area almost near the wheel, there seems to be alot of moisture. I am guessing a leak of some sort.

After i change the tanny oil, will the slipping stop>?

Cross your fingers and hope

it may or may not work...the burnt smell is not a good thing. If it continues to slip, I'd suggest posting again to ask for suggestions for your next move.

If your car has the external tranny filter, you should change that also. Since no service has been done on the car the ext filter might be filled up. The TPS may also be no good too. Not finding any of those problems would mean the clutches are shot.

i took it to a local shop today and they mechanic said that it would not be a good idea to change the fluid now, because the tranny might not shift at all. He said that I would have to get the tranny rebuilt...

I had the same thing with mine. I had it rebuilt. Now I'm having it rebuilt again. Long story...won't bore ya!

2nd to 3rd shift flare is fairly common it seems.

G'Day from Down Under.
Sounds like the problem I had with my recently purchased '92 LSi, would drive and shift first and second, but flare in third and forth if given a chance.
I could hear the box change to third, but no power to the wheels.
If I held in second to a bit of speed then manually shift to third and fourth, I could hear it select each one but wouldn't drive.
Tranny oil was a bit dark and hoped that maybe the filter was clogged, so did a drain, open, flush and clean of the box and the cooling lines to the radiator but when put it all back together there was no difference
Result; had to take it to a tranny rebuilder for a full overhaul, the repair list looked like he replaced everything that moved, cost; about six weeks wages
Moral; service your box regularly!
Arthur.
ps. I'm not sure if the 2nd-3rd flare is really that common, check after the rebuild.
