Is 5w-40 oil alright to use?

Is a 5w-40 weight oil alright to use in my SVX? I don't believe that weight was around when our cars were manufactured so there's no info in the manual about it. I'm looking at the full synthetic Rotella T6 5-40. We use it in our 05' Baja turbo and have had great results with it.

That is what I use in mine, its full synthetic and it has properties that meet the requirements. is it ideal not likely but it doesn't hurt and its cheaper then many of the "good" full synthetic oils that would be better.
Also I look at this these cars are many years old now unless you rebuilt the engine the tolerances are probably looser then stock so that thicker oil will help

Unless you're in the Arctic, go for it. I run either the 5-40 or 0-40 T6 in my Legacy, depending on what's on sale. With blessings from Blackstone Labs I've been able to push my oil change intervals out to 10,000 KM (6000 miles), so between that and buying oil by the barrel I've managed to save quite a bit of money with Rotella.

I've never seen the 0-40 before. Where did you purchase that?

I am not sure of 0-40, I tried some Mobil 1 Euro 0w40 and it seemed that the svx started making a slight noise I ran it for 5 miles max and drained it and put T6 in

Canadian Tire. I believe the 0-40 only comes in barrels though.

Been using 5w40 also and have no problems. The engine seems to like it.

The 0W-40 is a lot thinner when cold and flows into the tight clearances between the bearings, rings and oil passages of a newly rebuilt or newer engine. After breaking in my new engine with conventional oil (5 changes in 1000 miles) I started the 0W-40.

The Mobil 1 0W40. It is closer to a 10W30 than a 10W40 at operating temperatures. It has an excellent HTHS viscosity, so it shouldn't shear even in an STi engine under stress. It also has great low temperature viscosity for cold climates.

One other thing to note is that the Mobil 1 0W40 has a very high TBN value, which means it is great for extended oil change intervals.in my case every three years with only a filter change and new oil annually.

If you want some extra seal conditioners to hold off leaks on notoriously leaky Subaru engines, either blend the M1 0W40 with the M1 5W30 HM or add Lubegard Bio/Tech Engine Protectant to the M1 0W40 oil. I was not looking for the seal conditioners of a high mileage oil , which you may need.

The Lubegard product adds some seal conditioners and a special polar ester molecule that creates an additional protective coating on engine parts.

The added ester film on the metal surface will help avoid damage when you start the car after it has sat for a long time.

The recommendations were from Blackstone Labs, which does my used oil analysis. Along with consultations with Mobil 1 directly.

Looks like Amazon has it, but its at a high price right now. Around $9 seems to be the usual sweet spot according to CCC.

Running Mobil 1 5W-40 right now, 90-some thousand miles on the engine. Ran it for 10k miles last time and the old oil looks almost new. BUT, I'm not having my oil tested. So, all I can say for sure is that my car is still running well.
Weird coincidence, too, that I took a trip right after the oil change and got 28 mpg. Can't be the oil, right? Prior to that, I'd never recorded better than 24 mpg.

Cdn Tire actually sell 0-40 Euro Spec.in 1 litre Royal Purple, 1 L & 5L Castrol Edge and it's own 5L Formula 1 house brand.

I use the Castrol in my Audi A3, mainly because it's the cheapest when on sale. When Cdn Tire puts it 40% off it's less expensive than their house brand when it goes on sale at 35% off.
