Legacy engine/gearbox question
Hey folks, long time no see ....
Question: I have found a '96 2.2L 5-mt engine to my '90 2.2L 4EAT Legacy, and I wonder if it would fit. I can buy this engine really cheap, and only 100 000km on it. The thing I'm most worried about is the old ECU (4EAT) , is there any changes in the sensors and so on the newer engine (5-mt). And if the 4EAT would fit on the new 5-mt engine without major mod's. -Cheers, Sonny

Will the engine fit? yes. Will the engine and trans bolt up and work properly? yes. Will you have to change a whole mess of wiring? yes. From 96 on are OBD-II engines, suffice to say that wiring will be a *****. You're pretty much guaranteed not to be able to use your old ECU. Also I believe 96 is when they started using phase II transmissions, I dont know what interaction if any, those have between the ECU and the TCU. My advice to you, find first gen legacy engine, and throw that in there.

It should work, you just need to swap the engine wiring harness off your old engine onto the newer engine, and a coulpe of the sensors will be different, so you swap those too (Cam Position Sensor and Crank position sensor, for example), the engine is really the same, I believe....

i dunno about jdm models but the US OBDII models of all cars have an up and down 02 sensor to detect the function of the catalytic converter. You will need this if you will use the OBDII ecu. This mean exhaust modification also. Just another thing to let u know

Well, the thing is that the old engine is broken, and has been for a year now, and I stumbled over this -96 engine.
The car is otherwise in very good shape, and my wife loved it, she now has to use the Trendy but it's a little bit small for her daily needs. I had the option to rebuild the old engine with 350000 km on it, for the same price as I can buy the newer -96 engine with only 100000 km on it, so the choice is not so hard But all answers seems to sum up to: -Would physically fit in the engine bay -Would -"- fit to the 4EAT -Would probably be capable of using the old exhaust system w. cat. conv. -Would NOT fit onto the existing wire harness w.o mod's I plan to use the old ECU because there simply is no ECU with the new engine. But I do have the complete old engine to swap parts with, maybe those sensors and so on. The thing that now seems to be solved is: -are the locations/timings/positions/mountingholes of the sensors (and all stuff that need to be swapped) the same between the engines....well I'll beleive that anyway... /Sonny

Can anybody confirm whether the OBD2 thing applies to non-USDM cars?
I have a 96 UK Legacy and there are many differences between it and the US model shown in the Haynes Manual. |

I had to do this when I put a 92 2.2 into my old 90 2.2 Legacy... A little bit of a pain to re-route the wiring harness, but I did it after the motor was sitting in the car...I STRONGLY recommend swapping all the parts and wiring while they are BOTH out of the car....then drop in the new engine.

b3lha, I didn't even think about his engine not being USDM, I don't know when they started doing OBD-II in other countries. Also you can't take the Haynes manual as a real manual. It's not very specific for any car.
Huck, what was your 90? Was it an auto or a manual? If it was an auto you didnt have to do that. |

It was a manual, (the new motor was out of an Auto) and I did have to swap the wiring harness, as I put it in the car before I realized they were different....made it a PITA to swap out in the car....should've pulled it back out, to switch it all out.

I probably will do transplant then, it seems to be possible.
And I WILL swap the engine harness AND all other stuff BEFORE I'll put the new engine in , I'll promise (there is already a '92 4EAT in the car, swapped for some years ago , -a '90 Legacy with a '92 G-box and a '96 engine , whatawagon ) Thanx guys , I'll keep you posted ... /Sonny
