Well, don't forget these numbers Paddles is showing here refer to Japanese versions for the home market, all right hand drive cars.

In turn, the Japanese did not have LsL and Lsi models like you seem to have in the States.

But calling it an S40 sounds cool, so why not?

Thanks David.

My estimate for JDM manufacture was 8000 approx, the reality was closer to 6000.

You have just explained a big part of the mistaken estimate.

I've started keeping track of known SVXes on the road in the UK - ones that belong to members here, and ones that have come up on ebay and autotrader in the last couple of months. So far I've counted 47 but I'm sure there are others.

The list is in my locker. If you're in the UK and not on the list, please send me your details.

I think DVLA will only have records of UK model SVXes. Imports are just recorded as "Subaru, 2-axle rigid body" regardless of what you write on the registration form. So there is no way to separate the Alcyones from the other Subaru models in their database. It should be possible to get the numbers from them under the freedom of information act.

I say, young man.....

That's a pity Phil.

Over here, there is a separate "code" for each vehicle model, even when imported second hand.

It would still be good if someone on your side contacted the DVLA, and looked for the statistics.

From looking at their site, they are more used to supplying information about individual vehicles, accident history, current registration, mileage etc. To get the figures we want, you would have to emphasise we are not interested in personal details about owners, which would contravene the Data Protection act of 1988 I think.

Also, you would need to make a case as to WHY we want the information. Their phrase as to when they are allowed to "release information" is along the lines of
<<To anyone who can demonstrate reasonable cause, including insurance companies, finance houses and the public.>>

As the SVX World Network is the biggest single interest organisation for this car model, with over 4000 members worldwide, I think it is reasonable and in the interests of current and future owners who wish to use, maintain and preserve these cars, to expect the DVLA to release statistics on the numbers of these cars registered initially in the UK, and the numbers currently registered.

Our club support activities, including tracking of vehicle's history would be of value in defeating fraud and theft, and an aid to owners if cars are stolen, or stolen cars are offered for sale.

If you or Phil would draft a letter to them, the key phrase is "reasonable cause". If there is a charge for the research, I'm sure we could contribute, it would be worth paying to get the facts.

Would you take on the task?

Joe

I'll send them an email and see if they respond.

I remembered that the DVLA database also holds the engine size. So a search for Subaru "2 axle rigid body" with 3.3L engines will separate the wheat from the chaff (Provided somebody at the DVLA understands how to properly query the database).

What we want to know is:

1) Number of Subaru SVX models registered.
2) Number of Subaru SVX models currently taxed.
3) Number of Subaru 3.3 Litre "2 axle rigid body" registered.
4) Number of Subaru 3.3 Litre "2 axle rigid body" currently taxed.

Yep. Marvellous.

I can see a logical mindset at work here.

Question Information in another agency?

Phil

When cars are imported, as both of yours were, I am sure import duty has to be paid, and probably VAT on entry to the EU.

Is it possible that Internal Revenue or the VAT office retain a database of information on cars imported to the UK?

I only ask because it has to be the case that these agencies must take note of the individual VIN numbers as cars are imported and registered. This in turn may mean there is a database or databases somewhere that holds the list of all these VIN numbers and model details.

That would be worth getting access to if we could. They probably would regard divulging the VIN identification as Personal Data under the terms of the Data Protection Act.

Joe

You're probably right Joe. I remember reading something about that when we imported the '94.

I've emailed DVLA the questions above and I also pointed out that they could just search the database for chassis numbers starting JF1CX for UK models and CXD or CXW for imports.

I don't think the information we are asking for would be regarded as personal under the DPA. But according to the DVLA website, they are due to review their policy about giving out information. I think this is due to the recent press revelations that they've been selling personal data to gangs of known criminals.

Response from DVLA

Quote:
Thank you for your email.

Non-personal anonymised vehicle data extracted from the DVLA vehicle register is now available through six commercial selling agents.

The data comprises of 28 data fields taken from the vehicle register, but does not include the name and address of vehicle keepers, vehicle registration mark, vehicle identification or engine number. This information has been omitted to protect and ensure the anonymity of individual vehicle keepers.

The data does include partial postcode information that will for example, enable the distribution of vehicles across Great Britain to be deduced by make, model and body type.

Data from Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands, which have their own vehicle registers, is not included in the scheme.

We believe the data to be of tremendous value to industry in advertising campaigns, and for deciding the optimum location for siting dealerships or retail outlets.

For more information on prices and what information and products are available, please contact any of the following selling agents.

Looks like they are passing the buck. I guess the next step is to talk to these agents. Note that DVLA are not giving VIN numbers to the agents, which is a pity because it would make searching for imports easier. Presumably they also can't tell whether the vehicle is currently taxed (ie. Still on the road)

Official JDM figures

I sent an e mail to Subaru Japan about total JDM SVX production. Their reply stated 5,951 and US was 14,257.

Good to get this far, Phil, good work.

Will you follow up with the commercial agents then? If we have to buy the info, let me know how much money you need.

Thanks

Joe

Thanks for this info Paddles, and the help.

I expect there could be general figures bandied around, which could create confusion.

David is mentioning a figure of 1000 for Canada, I presume approximate. Added to the official US figures from Paddles, this does give an approximate total of 15,000+ for the North American continent. And we know from members joining that South American countries had them for sale also, although we don't have figures on these numbers sold yet. I'm presuming they would be small enough, although over the amount of countries concerned, and over the time they were on sale, I suppose total sales for South America could be 200-500 cars.

Anybody have any thoughts or information on that?

Joe

I've emailed the contacts on that list, will let you know if I hear anything back. I still think DVLA might be an option with a little perseverance.
