Hi from a newbie
Hi All, at present I have a nice (make that very nice) S1 Elise which I have had for 3 years but now need more room in an 'interesting' car and thoughts turned to the SVX.
I live in Leicester, England and would be interested in looking at and talking to owners to gain a bit of knowledge before taking the plunge. Any brave souls out there able to help. Peter peter12bar@aol.com 07830 36 46 86 |

Hi Peter.
We're not too far from you up in Lincoln, and pass through Leicester quite regularly. Next time we're heading your way we could meet up with you if you'd like. In the mean time, pop over to the European section and introduce yourself there too. Feel free to ask anything you like, we're a friendly bunch !! Phil.

Hi Peter, welcome to the club.
The best advice I can give you is don't buy the first one you see. Take your time and have a good look at all the SVXes for sale within a reasonable driving distance of your home. Give them all a thorough test drive and then buy the very best one you can. There is not much market for these cars, and they often sit unsold for months. You should be able to haggle a good discount. The SVX is a fabulous car to own and drive. It is very smooth and comfortable on a long journey or when stuck in traffic, but it has enough grip and power to really enjoy yourself on a twisty road. It's a big heavy solid over-engineered car, very different to your lightweight elise I imagine. Despite what you might have read, the SVX is a reliable car for daily driving but, like all old cars, occasionally parts need replacing. SVX parts are expensive and most mechanics have never worked on an SVX before. If you are able to do at least some of your own maintenance then you will save a lot of cash. As you have probably read: The SVX has a tendancy to eat it's gearbox, especially the earlier cars. Our 1992 car has done it twice, and the rebuild costs over £1600. When looking at your prospective purchase, check the gearbox fluid is clean and red and doesn't smell burnt or have any black particles in it. When test driving, see if you can detect any slippage during gear shifts. Fit a transmission cooler soon after purchasing and then change the transmission fluid regularly. As far as specifications go, you will see two distinct types. The UK models are all fully loaded with goodies. The grey imports bearing the name "Alcyone" come in several different flavours as described by James Dunne's website: http://www.geocities.com/jamsvx/versions.html. The very best part about owning an SVX is the individuality. It's not just another boring, mass produced, built-on-the-cheap vehicle. Nobody else has got one and everyone is interested to look at it. I often get approached in car parks or at petrol stations, people asking what sort of car it is and what it's like to own. Phil.

I just love the English grammer Its great!! . Idon't mean to hijack the thread just want to share a fun story I have a rental house here in California and my renters are from the UK. The renter called me and asked why are all the light switches so low? Light switches in the US are mounted 36 inches from the floor(and I know in Europe they are much higher)I know this cause my folks are from Holland. The reason they are only 3 feet from the gound here is for handicapped persons!.The reason she asked is because her two small children (i think 16months and 36months) do nothing but flip the light on and off all day . Something they couldn't never do in the UK. . Cute Ehh! . Oh! one last thing , being a huge soccer fan do you think Michael Owen is coming back? I do! I hope to MAN U

exclusive club!
Hi Peter, or Eh-up as said by a Yorkshire man!
As my Mentors have said in the previous replies, this is 'some' car to own. I have owned mine since Nov 04 and and joined the net just shortly afterwards, I live in The wilds of Scotland and purchased mine from a guy in Norwich and was willing to travel to get it....fortunately for me it was a good one with FSSH. but still req some TLC to make perfect as it is a 92 UK model. For me, this site and its 'members' have more to offer than you could ever imagine, people are genuine and are eager to help and share there knowledge when you post a question, ......both sides of the pond and down under...and Ireland! When the car is runinng and looking its best people really do give it twenty questions and end up gob smacked when you reel of the spec! It is one if Britains rarest cars but is refined and complex and a joy to own/drive..I use mine every day. Welcome.... John Last edited by blueji; 08-08-2005 at 11:57 AM. |

Great start
Hi All impressed with the breadth of the replies, thanks to all. Like with most cars getting a late model would seem to be the best route. Phil, would be great to meet up and swap stories.
Regarding pix of the Elise, will look see how I do that and get sorted. Always happy to show off the Black Swan (S1). Will start searching the sales pages. Peter |
