Angry Engine Swap - Found broken flexplate

In a short 4.5 hours, I had the old engine out and was getting ready to install the new engine. I was getting ready to remove the flexpalte and discovered it was cracked in many places. there was rust in some of the cracks so I believe that has been cracked for a while.

I guess this engine swap may have saved me a shattered flexplate and a tow later down the road..

Wink Flex Plate

I can relate to your situation about your flex plate. As of 02/18/03, I just got a remanufactured transmission at the local Suby dealer. They found my flex plate to have a hair line crack on it. They suggested to replace it. The dealer charged me $37.63, but you can get it for less at Subaruparts.com for $28.68 plus $ 7.95 for shipping. The flex plate is shared with the Leagacy if you did not know. I have a 1994 LSI and I went to your link and seen your pics of your plate, the part number is the same as mine. Anyway good luck on your new engine.

Hi Doug,

Any idea why there is so much rust on the TC? There is a picture below of what the TC for my engine looked like when I pulled my engine. The flexplate was not rusty on my old or used engine.

Yes, I know exactly why. I had no access plug in the top of the engine, so every time I washed my engine, water would apparently run down into the TC area. I did not realize this until yesterday when I went to remove the plug and it wasn't there.

Hmmm, shared with a Legacy? I wonder if the plate is not quite strong enough for the power of the EG33. This may be something that should be addressed when people mod their engines for more power.

In the Legacy Tranny I installed in My SVX before the 5-speed, the Flex plate is NOT the same as the SVX.
The SVX has a larger torque convertor, and the flex plate is different to match it.
May have changed on the newer models, but I doubt the SVX torque convertor changed.
My is a 92 as was the Legacy tranny I installed.

Not to be contradictory, but, it doesn't match up with the '91 Legacy. When I got my SVX tranny to replace the Legacy tranny that some @*&%# had put in my car, the flexplate had to be replaced. The gearing, as we all know, is different on the Legacy and SVX. What model year Legacy flexplate matches?

Exclamation SVX Flex Plate & Legacy Flex Plate

Ok here it is, I was wrong or actually the person I was speaking speaking with at the Suby Dealer was wrong, so don't kill the messenger! I just talk to the Parts Dept. at the dealership. The SVX has a larger flex plate, but has a similar set up as the SVX, so sorry for the wrong information!

No problem. Just didn't want someone to actually go out and purchase based on the info. That wouldn't be good.

Well, according to 1st Subaru Parts where I just ordered my new flexplate from, the SVX flexplate is shared with "Auto Trans & Transfer Case - 4 Speed Impreza & Sv, Flywheel, Svx"

So I do not know which year Imprezas came with the four speed auto.

I just hope the damn thing gets here before Reading...

Thanks for passing the meet monster over to me Randy

You've got nearly a month before the meet, the part is less than $50, and you knew your engine was bad a month ago.

When your car stops moving one week before the meet, then we'll talk about 'meet monsters,' okay, champ?
