Thanks to all who have offered help, especially Larryiii, who probably has the final solution. I'm off to Richmond, VA to celebrate '03 with a box 'o friends. Back late tomorrow. I'll try some of the suggestions & let you know how it goes.

Happy New Year to all.

Ron. (No cheap wine tonight - Woo-hoo, cheap champagne)!

As a result, many DVD players can't read CD-R media. Some DVD players come with two lasers so that they can read CD-R. For a technical discussion, see http://www2.osta.org/osta/html/cddvd/intro.html and http://www.emedialive.com/EM1998/bennett3.html.

CD-RW discs have a different formulation, and may work even on DVD players that can't handle CD-R media. If CD-R media doesn't work, try copying the disc to CD-RW instead (assuming your recorder supports CD-RW). "
Never had that problem with other DVD players, including my 40 dollar Apex from Kmart. Have had the problem with lot's of Panasonic non-dvd players.

Ron, my money is on the fact that the Panasonic recorder is designed to not duplicate copyrighted cd's. No swapping cd-r brands will help you. You can get a burner for your PC now for under $30. It's a 10 minute install and will work on anything you throw at it without special disks for music. Whether your older SVX changer will be able to read them is a matter of conjecture since few older cd players will read CD-R's. I am praying that the Pioneer changer in my SVX will but I won't know until I get a remote to operate it. Bite the bullet and buy a burner for the PC. You'll be glad you did

The original player in my '92 plays CD-Rs just fine; even 80 mins.
It must be something else; probably just a bad burn.
Try it again.

I'm back in town. Thanks again, folks, for more ideas. I had my friend in Richmond burn a copy on the same Maxell 80 minute disc using his computer & it plays in the stock SVX player just fine. The recording was done at normal playback speed. I don't know if & can control the speed with my JVC machine, but will read the manual. My real goal is to CDize old vinyl. I'll try the Memorex 74 minute discs & see what flies. I tried my original burned CD in the car on the way home. This time, it stayed in the player about 4 seconds, then ejected. Maybe finalization takes a week! I had no idea what an inexact science we had here. Ron.

I know that some of the 'home audio' cd burners needed special 'audio' CDRs, basically, they were preformatted.

THAT may be your problem, I'm sorry I didn't think of that before.

If I were you, I'd sell the thing on ebay and get a CD burner for your computer.

Thanks Ca$h, but this doesn't solve my vinyl & tape to CD project.

Ron.

Ron, don't forget that some of our younger members may not know what "vinyl" is

My understanding of those home units is that they'll copy the original of a copy-protected CD, but won't copy the copy.

If it wouldn't copy an original, it'd be of pretty limited use.

Actually, if it worked in some players but not others, finalization wasn't the problem. Sorry for the misinformation.

Actually, after reading about what all's involved in pressing or burning and then playing a CD back, I'm amazed the dang things work at all.

In case you didn't know, there is such a thing as burn quality, where a burned CD can have a higher error rate than tollerable by the playback unit. Some devices are better at reading low quality discs than others. You can try the Nero CD Speed program at http://www.cdspeed2000.com/ and run the SCANDISC utility to see what the quality of that disc is. To verify that your CDROM drive can detect errors, take an old unwanted CD or a new one from your most hated artist, scratch it up real good from about half way from center to the outside, then run scandisc on it. You should see a lot of yellow and red sectors as the test progresses towards the end of the CD.
