Driving with no plates, no inspection..
ugh. so i'm going through this whole thing with this old subie RX that I bought. It's located in Andover, ME which is ~200 miles north of me. I'm not going to be able to trailer it home, so it looks like i'll be riding up with a friend then driving it home. The problem is that it has no plates and an out-of-date inspection sticker. we're planning to drive up next friday afternoon, and drive back in the dark. We figure that way at least the inspection sticker won't be a problem... I'll probably wind up yanking the plates off the SVX too.. I don't think any cops will realize that an RX has nothing to do with the word ALCYONE
any advice on ways to get around the law? I heard that if I could find a dealer plate, I'd be free and clear, but I have only one way to obtain such a plate, and it's not looking too promising.. any and all suggestions are welcome, as they have the potential to save my ass -Adam |

would it work to get a trip permit from your local DOL? or do you have to actually have a liscense plate for them? Anyone im sure theres some way to do it.

I recall someone coughlwincough making a fake license plate out of some cardboard and a sharpie and then covering it with a heavily tinted license plate cover. He drove the car from Philly to chicago if I'm not mistaken without issue. Just a 'friendly' suggestion.

I would go to the DOL and find out about a trip permitt which was mentioned before. Most states have a 3 day permitt which allows you to drive the car from one place to another without a license. It would be a lot cheaper than a ticket. I would run without any plates before I would change the plates or put fake ones on. If you get caught, it would be a lot bigger fine for that. I know that I always get caught, so tend to say lawful. Hey, at least I don't have ulsers over it. Good luck on whatever you do.

I have done that. I also have another SVX following me very very closely and we had radio contact between 2 SVXes at all time in case police came close so that the police can not follow me directly behind my car. Not a good idea in the winter since slippery roads means accidents.... If you do follow that again, do it at your own risk. I had papers at the time to get me out of jail. Lwin

RX
So I'm guessing your not planning on registering it right away (until you fix it). The inspection is a ME inspection so your state probably has a 7 day grace period for someone who buys a car out of state to get in registered. If your planning to get a plate right away or even if your not the state that you buy it from should provide a temp tag to get ya home. Granted you gotta pay for it but not that much since you're not registering it there. As for the dealer tag. Works great so long as you know someone who will put it on their insurance for ya if not your screwed. That said I found an XT6 I'm after in VA that I'll use my SVX plate to get it back to PA.

Not recommanded. I did that to take my 94LSi back. I used the 94-L plates. I got pulled over right outside my house. Luckily, both cars are red (in the eye of the cop) so he let me go. Lwin

Just make sure you have enough to cover the fines and the impound fee, and possibly a few quarters for a phone call.
Whether you're driving down the highway, turning into a rest stop or getting some grub at arby's, if you're on a public road with no inspection and FAKE plates and you get stopped, you are not taking that car home. I'd imagine you'd have a heck of a time getting yourself home as well, since there's no quick way to prove the car isnt stolen. |

thanks for all advice..
the car has an out-of-date NH inspection sticker and no plates as of right now.. It is conceviable that I could register the car before I go to pick it up, since according to the state of NH, I am still the owner of the car. The guy I sold it to never even registered it, and since I had no title to transfer to him, he never got a title (which is part of the reason he never registered the car). Another "legitimate" option that exists is to get a dealer plate, which is actually sounding like it might work out. The thing that concerns me more than legally transporting the car is whether or not the car will physically and mechanically make it 200 miles to my house. THAT'S what worries me.. -a |

A trailer is starting to sound like a beter option.

Adam,
See if this will work for you. It worked in PA for me. I sold a camping trailer to someone who was taking it out of state. We went to a tag agency that provided him with a cardboard temporary registration plate. It was good for fifteen days, just enough to get it out of state and home. Forget the fee but it was far less than a fine. Maybe ME will do the same. If they will oblige I guess you should be prepared for insurance requirements also. Good luck, John |

In New Jersey your auto insurance policy automatically covers any vehicle that you purchase for a short time, so that you can get it home. Call your insurance agent and find out how the laws apply in your state.
