Hood struts: FYI

Hi all,
I followed a thread to discover the replacement hood struts needed for the LS I just acquired. I called the company to order and was told that it would be another month before they would have any. Anyone have ideas where I might get some? Both of the struts on my car are shot and worthless. I've called a couple of auto parts stores and no one seems to have a cross match (for the GSNI-2449-89).

Grn Nvy I just got thru doing this on the Pace Car, a local shop got the struts for me (cross-over from the part number in the Link John added a couple post up) a LOT stiffer than a set of new stock ones, should hold the SVX hood up for many years

Any chance you have the part number for these? Been looking over the site, but not feeling warm & fuzzy about what I'm looking at! Also, have you had a chance to install them yet? If so, how do you like them?

Or.....you can do the 5 cent solution. Find a 2' or longer piece of 5/8th PVC pipe. Find a bench saw. Put saw fence close to the blade, lower blade enough to just cut through one side of the pipe, & run the pipe 2, or 3 horizontal passes through the blade. Cut the slot at least 6" long, or whatever needed to slip over the strut piston when hood's up. Cut the pipe to length from the leftover piece that kept your fingers from bleeding profusely. Raise hood, & snap piece on piston. This fix will outlast a middle east war. The pipe's groove will slip on & store on the battery hold-down piece. You're welcome.

Ron.

Hey,
Sorry, haven't been on in a while, just saw your post, but in bed already. I do have the part number & YES! They're installed and I LUV-EM! I ordered the wrong ends though (the threaded ones) still, no major mods - less than 2 bucks in "stainless" nuts & washers, they were in (both sides) in less than 10 monutes. A bit of warning though... after install, work out at the gym for a while to prepare for opening the hood for the first time ... think "catapult or slingshot"... on the other hand, forget the gym, you'll work your Biceps & Lats just closing the hood ;-) ... Just kidding! Don't have the paperwork handy now, but will dig out and send to you tomorrow. Ah-ight?

Nice, it'll be nice to finally ditch the redneck vice grip setup I'm currently using!

If I knew how to do pics, I'd be less wordy. One more time....

Close your eyes & imagine a SEVEN inch ( I measured this time) long piece of 5/8" PVC. Imagine a 1/4 wide groove cut along the length of it. Looking at the end of the piece you'll see the letter "C". So, to get that cut, you need to run the pipe along a bench saw blade that's raised no more than 1/4". Run pipe through once. Then turn slightly & run again, probably 3 times, in order to get a 1/4" wide slot. It will now snap on the raised hood piston. Phew!
