Swapping SVX trans. into a Legacy...

Yes, you read that correctly! Last month I purchased a '92 Legacy AWD turbo sport sedan with an automatic trans. which immediately failed. I happen to have a spare '92 SVX AWD trans. that supposedly has been rebuilt. I probably won't ever use it because my SVX's are 2wd. Would it fit in the Legacy? Or more importantly, would an SVX rear diff fit in the Legacy since the final drive ratios are different? (I do have access to an SVX rear diff to go with the tranny.) Call me crazy, but I don't have funds to drop a 5mt into it right now.

It will bolt right in, Good Sir.
And yes the rear differential will fit as well.
However you will have to either fit the SVX rear axles to the car, or do without the limited slip rear.

I'm interested to see what kind of mileage the turbo 4 will get with the svx's long gearing.

I imagine the car will drive pretty well with that trans.

It is going to suck!
You will have to be into the throttle all of the time to get the car moving.

Further, the stall speed is quite a bit lower in the SVX converter. This combined to the high gearing makes things worse.

The Legacy converter may be full of crap depending on how the tranny failed.

I believe that a Legacy torque converter will not work well with the SVX gearing.
With a 4.44 swap you can use either the SVX torque converter or the original Legacy Outback/Forester/ Legacy GT/whatever torque converter.

Re: Swapping SVX trans. into a Legacy...

I dont know how difficult it is, nor do I know if his front legacy diff is any good but could he swap the svx transmission onto his legacy front diff and keep his legacy rear diff.

Re: Swapping SVX trans. into a Legacy...

Looks like I won't be doing a swap after all. The old tranny came back to life after I drained and filled the fluid a couple of times and replaced a severely clogged trans filter that was probably original to the car w/136k miles on it. This car was a "barn find" that had been off the road for 10+ years for reasons unknown.
