Well since all the suby's are running good with no problems I found myself bored. I needed something to keep me busy so I bought a 1982 Yamaha xj650 maxim for $200. Needs some work but thats why I got it. Starters it needs a battery, gas tank as the old one has 2 holes in it. Going to get an xj750 tank for it as it holds 1 extra gallon and has a fuel gauge. Also need to see if it runs, hasn't been ran since 2010 when the tank got the hole. Here are some pics so far...............

A good carb cleaning and sync will definitely be in order. I've been looking at similar age/size bikes for a month or so. They seem to run about $750.00 in working order.

The guy said it ran great before he parked it. Instead of replacing the tank he bought a brand new bike. I plan on stripping it down to the frame for repaint, rewire, and a couple other odds and ends but definitely going to tear the motor completely apart for some new rings, gaskets, and such.

You should fire it up before stripping it down... If the engine needs something, you can do it while your bike is in pieces.

Already on that Danny, just got a battery today and a bit of gas in a make shift tank, Just need to let the thing charge. I only stripped off the non essentials so far.

Wouldn't bother tearing the motor apart on a UJM esp. at 40k. I've never seen one in bad shape inside unless it was in horrible shape outside. Carbs that's another story.

Well I just got it to fire up first try not bad for sitting for almost 2 yrs. Ben it leaks oil and seeing as im taking a bunch of stuff off to replace the seals I might as well do them all as I plan on getting an engine reseal kit .

Here are some recent pics. It's litterally down to the motor and a couple odds and ends. Also started to sand the frame where some surface rust was with some 180 grit.

Got a lot done today. Got it stripped down to the frame and washed the motor off. Prep/primer/paint/cleared it with a gunmetal metallic. Looks pretty good i'd say.

Best way to remove the rust without scratch marks to the frame (180 grit) is to sandblast/mediablast then powdercoat. Trust me on this, I sandblasted my Merc with a 9 bar setting (low setting but takes more time), the metal turned out to be clean with no damage/scratches

I actually did sand it with 180 then a red scuff pad. Then the primer/paint,ect.

Ok got the wiring harness back on, air box, some sensor stuff. Also painted the triple tree and top bracket black metallic but while doing so realized the old 30yr old ball bearings have pitted themselves into the races so i'll be upgrading to a taper style head bearing. Still stuck on an engine color which would either be flat black with gold lettering or gold motor with black lettering. Mind you that the bike will have some gold trim on it like this pic. If someone could photoshop this with a gold motor that would be awsome.
