SVX in Latest Issue of Hemmings Sports & Exotic Cars Magazine

Check out Page 31 (attached) of the latest issue (Jan 2011) of "Hemmings Sports & Exotic Cars". The SVX is one of 19 cars identified as a potential collectible, as is the '98 - '99 Impreza 2.5RS.

Great magazine if you have not seen it .....

I "cut out" the top part of the page to reduce the photo size - otherwise, I could not upload to the site since I don't know how to reduce the size of the whole thing ...

It's like the difference between crazy and eccentric. If you're crazy you're a weirdo but eccentric you're a rich weirdo.

Re: SVX in Latest Issue of Hemmings Sports & Exotic Cars Magazine

Although there are a few fans of the SVX in the classic automotive community, I've come the the opposite conclusion regarding the potential of the SVX as a classic in terms of value. IMO it will never reach even a moderate collector status for a number of reasons.

1. It is not a model supported by its maker or an independent supplier. This is starting to show but in the next 5-10 years when rubber seals and major electrical components start to go will become all too apparent.

2. It is a odd bird that is very different to anything Subaru has made since so it lacks an appeal by owners of the current marque.

3. Most examples that you see on the street are very shall we say long in the tooth, poorly cared for or badly modified. Can't tell you the last time I saw even a "presentable" SVX on the road let alone a concours example since they don't exist.

4. Lack of a public support for the car. The "what the heck is that" doesn't lead to a collector car. The average person should already know what it is if there is collector potential.

5. Lack of owners willing to educate the public and automotive community. Holding meets at car shows does much more for the car then meeting in an empty parking lot where you cannot attract potential new owners with the money and know how to maintain a car. Remember, this is not a Corvette or Muscule Car where the shear numbers of cars ensures that there are "presentable" examples at virtually every car show across the country. Also, who is buying up the "parts cars" for racing. Again, win on Sunday, sell on Monday still reigns true. It keeps cars from going to the crusher and also keeps more of the soon to be extinct specialty parts in the used supply chain.

6. Lack of a true nationwide club which holds meets at a national, regional and local level. Even getting together with other local members for dinner a couple times a year. Sure there is some of this but the reality is it is spotty at best. Where is the SVX club, what is in their bank account, how many paying members are there, where is their newsletter giving details of the upcoming events for the next quarter? There was promise nearly 10 years ago this was going to happen but it didn't, in fact it has gone in the opposite direction.

While it is nice to see the SVX in positive print, instead of sitting there patting yourself on the back for picking a car to love that one writer thinks is cool, it should inspire you to take it out to the next local car show, spend that $4000 for a paint job even though your car isn't "worth" more than $3k on a good day, get involved in putting inc. behind the SVX World Network, running for offices etc. Maybe you'll inspire me to buy another one because I again see a future in the car and in the Network.

Lots of food for thought in this post, but I think this statement hits the nail on the head.

In my area most car shows are classic shows and require that entries be 25 years old or older. SVX is just approaching/is 20. A few shows here allow 20 year old cars.

To put things in perspective though, the SVX is still pretty current. There are millions of '92 and older cars out there as daily drivers. You can't rush things and in my opinion age is what will bring up the value if it is going to happen.

That said, ID LOVE TO SEE THE 20th ANNIVERSARY MEET HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH SOME OTHER MAJOR CAR EVENT. We could pick a meet, approach the organizers for a group special entry and have a blast. Perhaps we could even get Dave Hemming to visit.

Not rushing to judgement just a sad reality of the facts. The foundations which make a car collectible haven't been done. There isn't a parts source so the cars will simply age and die a slow painful death rather than being restored or maintained in good shape. That's where you need a strong club to keep parts suppliers motivated or even to buy the tooling for making certain parts.

20th Anniversary meet? You really think it will happen in any sort of real numbers even similar to the 10th? Pass me what your smoking.

Re: SVX in Latest Issue of Hemmings Sports & Exotic Cars Magazine

I couldn’t find this at the newsstand so we ordered a copy from EBay. It is even better than originally portrayed in the post. They have 4 catagories

1) go on beat it – (not going to appreciate )4 cars, Audi V8, 500 SL, Jag XJS, Infinity Q45

2) Just drive it – (Maybe but don’t count on it) 7 cars, 300ZX Turbo, Saab 900 Turbo, Impreza 2.5RS, VW GTI 16V, Porsche 928, Audi Quattro Coupe, Eclipse GSX

3) Baby it – (could be so treat it well) 4 cars, Alfa 164, Sentra SE-R, VW Corrado, Celica All-Trac Turbo

5) Seal it in a climate-controlled sarcophagus and get back to us in 20 years - (A lock) 3 cars with the SVX being the last and highest rated. Toyota MR2 Turbo, Acura Integra GS-R and the SVX

Bob has a HUGE and important point. We need to build up the network not let it slowly die. Take care of your SVX and SHOW IT OFF! not only at car meets but also at racing events and other auto enthusiast events. Get out and be seen. Don't be scared to talk about your SVX to others and EDUCATE them about the SVX and how awesome it is and what is available for it now.
