Overheating Motor

...... block tester kit time........ As Tom said, a HG will over pressurize the cooling system and pump coolant out, but wont vac much back in. If the new cap doesnt help, the next logical step would be to borrow the block tester kit from Autozone to confirm the possible HG leak, then go from there.

Well I do have a HG tester at work but my mech is certain that it's the cap. He's done tons and tons of Headgaskets on the 2.5 and such and he said mines not showing a leak to him. He said if it was overpressurizing the radiator then coolant would have gushed out of the overflow by now and it would have overheated. My drive to work is about 35miles of steep hills so the motor is pushed. On a good note I installed the new rad cap and will be watching it all day and then see if it draws it back in.

I checked the overflow tank this morning after the motor was completly cooled from the other night and it drew the coolan back in the radiator. So the good news is that this whole ordeal is fixed with a new thermostat and radiator cap.

Guess i'll update this since it's long overdue. It spiked temp again a couple months after the last fix for driving over 2 hrs. A week ago I out in the only thing I didn;t replace on it cooling wise which was a new OEM water pump. Drove 650 miles straight yesterday and NO problems what so ever. It actually runs cooler now. My guess was the old pump wasn't spinning fast enough when I needed it to.

If you run cool enough, and your temp gauge starts to read too low sometimes, certain people will tell you you car has a blown head gasket. Even if you change a pump or tstat or radiator cap or temp sender and the "symptom" goes away, those same people will still stalk you on this board to tell you the symptom was still because of a blown head gasket and not because of the part you replaced which eliminated the symptom.

I know. I am being sarcastic. It is good to hear that someone else was able to eliminate a "cooling issue" with something less drastic than a head gasket replacement and especially considering that the headgasket wasn't the problem! But at this point, such a job would merely be an annoyance anyways thanks to my blooming Christmas Cactus.

I'll update this since its been a couple years since I replaced the pump and still no overheating. That is all.
