svx vs audi a4 quattro

so ive posted a few times on here asking for everyones opinions on trading my car for something else. ive got another for you guys to give me ideas on so let me know what you think.

ive got an offer to trade my svx for a 96 audi a4 quattro with 250k miles. car is in great shape and is said to be mechanically sound. it wont be until next week that i get to go test drive the car however.

anyway, just want some opinions on this trade, are audi's hard to work on, expensive relative to the svx, reliable, etc. just any info you guys can give me on if i should take the trade or not would be helpful. here is some info on the car:

All Weather Package:
Heated front seats, heated windshield washer nozzles, heated driver door lock, Outside Temperature Gauge
Quattro all-wheel drive
Rare Euro Trunk (big enough to hold a European License Plate)
Options:
12v 2.8 V6 Engine (mid 20's MPG!!!)
Audi/bose premium sound system with anti-theft AM/FM stereo cassette radio and 4 acoustically tuned speaker modules
6-disc CD changer
Trip computer
3-spoke sport steering wheel
Kodiak Leather upholstery
Pearlescent white paint
5-Speed Manual Transmission

My Custom Work:
SuperSprint Magnum Exhaust (nice low European Tone, no "rice" here!)
De-Badged Front Grill and Trunk (looks very clean)

Recent Maintenance:
Full Timing Belt Service
Front CV Boot
Front Control Arm
Rear Wheel Bearing
EGR Cleaning
New Wipers
New Tires in Jan 08
Akibono Euro Brake Pads
034 Motor Mounts
S4 Tie Rods

There's been over $3000 in recent maintence, mechanically, this car is perfect.

Flaws:
Crack along bottom of windshield (doesn't affect vision)
Cut/Scratch in rear bumper
BB-sized dent on left rear quarter panel
Small tear on driver seat
Smaller tear on rear seat
Bum Sun Roof Motor (won't open)
ABS Light on (faulty wire, ABS system works)
Due to a door motor, the AC does not work, but the heat is perfect!

thanks for any help!!

Re: svx vs audi a4 quattro

Audi's are not for the average home mechanic to fix. they are a car that "must have audi dealer work on".
and they charge 150 an hour, and parts are even more pricey than a svx.
don't do it.

Thumbs down Re: svx vs audi a4 quattro

DUDE ARE YOU NUTS????? That Audi is a rolling casket. 250,000 miles???? As a whole, gasoline german engines last no where near as long as a jap engines. Yea you might find one here and there, but you get a lot more miles out of a jap engine. To tell you the truth I wouldn't even but a japanese car with that many miles, unless somebody gave it to me. My best friends got one. He loves his vw's and audi's, loves em, but he wont buy one with over 65,000 miles. This is the first one I've ever heard with that many miles. The parts are through the roof. My mom has an A6 with the same motor. Right now with 160,000 on it, looking to get rid of it before another problem arises. I do have to say the 2.8 V6 is a good motor compaired to other vw and audi engines.

We just had to change some sensors for the tranny and with labor it was 500 bucks. For two sensors. The check engine lights are always coming on and for very stupid things. They have electrical problems. They are an absolute pain in the ass to work on, absolute pain. To change the timing belt you have to remove the front end. Everything is jam packed tight. Interior parts break.

Yes I know they are nice cars, there great when they new, but with that many miles, I WOULDN'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!! Maby the middle class can afford them, but with that many miles, I'll assure you, you get to know your local dealer really good. Trust me. I wouldn't trade for it, especially for my SVX.

and, i really doubt the dealer would even touch a car with that many miles. they even write them off at that point.

Re: svx vs audi a4 quattro

Audis are excellent cars, and i really do like most Audi's better than my SVX. Here is some advice, though. If you're going to get a 6 Cylinder B5, stick with a 98+ with the 30v motor. I had a 1.8t B5, and it was incredible. I had APR Stage 1+ and it transformed it into a very potent car.

Audis are different to work on, but once you're used to it, it becomes very simple. There is a great support group for them on several forums, and pretty much everything can be done in your garage. I do most of the work on my C5 A6 myself, and I don't claim to be anything more than an amateur.

I believe that Audi's are the best value in used cars. Period. If I had to choose between my Audi and my SVX, I'd choose the Audi every time.

You don't have to remove the nose section on a B5 with the 12v 2.8.

Re: svx vs audi a4 quattro

If you don't like the SVX that much, sell it and be done. It's unlikely many people would tell you to go for a deal even if it was a decent deal. You see, us here, at the "SVX World Network" are fond of the SVX, and try to retain them until it's a last resort if it comes to it. We don't simply try to trade it off for something that might appear to the general public as a higher status symbol.

Re: svx vs audi a4 quattro

Featurewise I think they're great. My Beetle only has 11,000 miles and I already have been plagued with electrical problems.

everytime my wipers are on my speedometer and instrument panel shuts off when the wiper returns to resting position.

I already have a malfunctioning power window switch, and both my headlights blew out at the same time.

I know im comparing a beetle to an Audi which isn't the same. But because of the experience I wrote off the idea of getting an A5 at the end of the year.

Unless the motor has been rebuilt, pass. That's too many miles on one of those engines and they're expensive to rebuild (i'm going to guess 3-4k). The 12V V6 is underpowered and upgrades on it are limited. The Audi's to get are the 20V turbo 5cyl S4's and S6's. I had a 95 and would not be posting on this forum had I not totalled it last summer.

Other than the tranny issue with the SVX that Audi is going to be way more expensive to work on.

Re: svx vs audi a4 quattro

oh and that car will pretty much get the exact same mileage as the SVX. I had a 30V 2.8 A4 and my svx gets better mileage on the highway.
