Re: HID kits on the cheap.

Perhaps I missed it, but is there any difference between the HID's offered by DDM and those offered by OT...other than price?

For low beams what is the safest/reliable/recommended wattage? thanks, chris

I'm not sure, but they're probably a different brand.

Factory HID's (metal halide) lamps are 35w.

I have to order a set so that I can see for myself.
Other than the differences mentioned by processengr, (thanks.) on his sets I forgot to mention that the $150.00 set that I bought so that I could compare them, I had to cast my own plugs so that would fit Nick's SVX.!?

All SVXi could use better lighting, and if these actually work and don't burn out, GREAT!!!

I did not send these guys money yet, mostly because , at that price, I had
doubts.

If these work, and last then GREAT!!!
I have known Dave at LavaLux since about 1980 and have named my firstborn son after him, and would trust him with my life!
I actually HAVE been in life and death situations with Dave, but those are stores for another time.

Re: HID kits on the cheap.

I put mine in today and am pretty happy. General impressions as I said before are that they're quite well built. Everything feels solid and sturdy. There are good water-seals on all the connectors and all the connectors fit together quite well.

One odd thing is that you have to reverse the connector from SVX's lighting connector to the ballast because the wires are backwards. Fine fit backwards just fine and I used zip ties to hold them together instead of the built in clip,

The lamp itself fits sungly into the socket on the headlight housing. The lamp appears to be pretty well built. The envelopes were identical and appeared to have the same amounts of metal-salts in them (as best as you can tell by a visual inspection)

I fired them up and they came right on. There was a small warmup delay, but it wasn't really bad, and that has to do with the amount of Xenon gas in the envelope. As with any other Metal-Halide lamp that I've seen (I work with lots of them in the professional lighting world, just much bigger 500-1500W) the initial startup included some colored flickering as the salts began to evaporate and take over for the Xenon gas. That should be less prevalent once they've had a little bit of burn-in time.

I haven't been able to take the car out because of some other problems, but so far they seem so good. DDM also makes a big deal about their lifetime warranty on the whole schebang. So if they do go out DDM should replace them for you.

I have the 35 watt versions. I can't really get a good wall picture while the car is on jack stands. Sorry

I forgot to mention that there was a very solid edge of the pattern with very little coloration or "rainbow effect" at the edge, which shows that there is pretty darn good arc-placement.

If you could, could you post some pics of what the lights look like from head-on?

I'm sorry but I can't. The car is in my garage on jack stands.

Ok, well then, in your opinion, are these lights an upgrade over our stock lights?

Re: HID kits on the cheap.

Hi,
From the pictures, these are are a different set from the $80 set I bought from Ebay. Did you try the FM radio while lamps are on/off?

Yes, and there wasn't any difference on or off. Is there with some?

Yes, all three sets arrived yesterday. They don't even have that nasty, Harbor Freight smell!

I ordered a fourth set for our Tribeca. I've been putting off buying HIDs for the 'Beca because its DRL module can't just be disconnected (that kills the brights and the fogs too) but these ballasts are supposed to cut power to the HIDs at less than 9vdc so, I'm hoping, that will prevent any flickering. fingers crossed.

Re: HID kits on the cheap.

I installed mine wednesday and so far they are great. I went with the 55w 4500k's and they put out some serious light. Install was simple, I just had to swap the wires coming from the stock svx headlight connector as they are reversed compared to the + and - on the HID connector that attaches to it. I happy with the quality, ease of installation, and the output.
