At Last, my svx is being worked on.

After 7months of being car-less. I am now on my way to having it back finally. The svx went over to a private mechanics yesterday. He works here in the Tri-cities at Hanford. The government facility in the northwest. He does all the maintenance on their vehicles and for this reason I felt comfortable with him. He's a reputable man, and after giving him some run down from the information I've complied on this site, I think he'll do a marvelous job. So a big thank you goes out to all of you as you've patiently coached me through some of the hang ups with these cars.

So I figure I'll be driving the good old suby in about 2 weeks. :

Hanford? Are you having him convert it to nuclear power?

Be sure to let us know how it goes, and more importantly there will be no excuse not to come out and join us on some NW drives this summer!

Congrats on getting your car in! I just got mine out of the shop today and took her for a drive...it was so fun being able to drive it again. Has sat in my garage for 8 months.

One major problem is now fixed, now I just have to get the AWD binding problem fixed. Yes, I have done a search on the forum and have been wading reading through hundreds of posts about the AWD binding problem. I am going to put in the FWD fuse and see what that does, maybe it will buy me some time. Then I will have to decide what to do next. I can't do any of the work myself. Subie dealer replaced my right strut and threw in both running boards for free and gave me a discount on top of that. Ithink they were in awe of the fact that I am trying to keep this beautiful car running.

I wish you the best of luck getting that sorted out. The expense is awful, but the car is too damn sweet to say no.

I was enlightened last night on the exact problem with my transmission. It was the front differential for sure. Something to do with the ring and pinion carrier. I don't know exactly what is broken, but from the sounds of it a gear tooth actually broke off. So I'm looking at about 2 weeks I'd say, then I'm driving agian.

I would also like to make a note that I will attend the NW meet if this all goes as planned. I've thought about how exciting it would be. Seeing all these other SVX enthusiasts. WOO! now I've got another reason to want the car back. I just need to start the slow restore of mine. Can't look like a complete slacker in front of all the other kids.

Well, if anyone has been reading my posts as I've gotten closer to restoration, I've run into yet another snag. It seems after having my new front diff installed, which was the failure of the transmission to begin with, I now have a leak somewhere. Since I am not the one doing the transmission itself, a solid mechanic my mom knows is doing the work, I've yet to see where the leak is actually coming from. I'm praying that its just a leaking hose but without an inspection I can't be sure where the liquid is coming from. So does anyone know common failures that happen when things are being worked on like this. I've been on a real tight budget so I've actually come out of this at about 500 in parts and right now I figure about 650 in labor.

I really don't want it to be inside the main transmission, b/c if he has to open it up, the expense jumps...a lot So I've really got my fingers crossed for a hose, even my radiator is leaking, anything but seals in the transmission.

Hmmm...Simple. the trans can only leak in so many places, most of which you can find without much trouble. If you dont have a lift, or a good jack and jackstands, OR one of them drive up ramp things, you can always drive half way up a sidewalk for a couple extra inches to get under the car.
first thing id look for is a hose going to the trans cooler in the radiator. The rubber lines connect from the radiatior to a metal line bolted to the engine, then back to rubber lines headed toward the transmission. fel around for fluid...remember, as the stuff leaks down, it gets blown to the back f the car by the wind passing underneath it, so your looking for the highest and forward most place that is wet.

Another thing to check is the pan gasket..youll want to wipe this off,go for a 20 minute or so drive, and check tomake sure where you wiped is still dry. If not, once again, look highest and forwardmost for the source of your leak

you can also check out the tourque converter seal...This is easy. Pull the dipstick to your front diff. Since it was just changed, the gear oil should be brand new, clearish brown. If it looks very dark, cloudy, and kindof thin, its possible your atf is leaking through the seal into the diff

Re: At Last, my svx is being worked on.

I have a new problem,

metal was found in the oil pan of the transmission and is most likely embedded in the clutches. I need to know a few things

1. if I put in a legacy or forester transmission, and leave my front and rear diff alone will it work?

2. Where can I get just a transmission, not the rear or front diff, just a transmission.

3. anyone know how much that's gonna cost, preferably under like 800$

thank you to everyones advice and knowledge so far, it's all got me a lot closer to getting my car running. I just really can't offered the car at this point, and it only keeps getting more expensive.
