Code 55

I ran my code and it gave me 5 long blinks and 5 short blinks. According to the faq this means it is a code 55 and something is wrong with my egr temp sensor. I just put a low mileage motor in the car and reused my old ECU. Is my car from california? What can I do to fix this code?

also how does the car display the blinks if more than one code is being thrown? Does it go from short blinks to a different number of long blinks again?

Significant Technical Input
Lots of EGR info here:

Not sure about SVX but most cars will repeat the code three times before moving on to the next code. Some cars go right to the next code in line. Some manufacturers display codes in order of occurence, others in order of importance - as in diagnose and repair the first code first. Also some cars can only recall one code, some only three or five, some have no limit and some store zero (no on-board memory - there was a time when memory was expensive.) Not trying to be confusing, just informative. Sometimes a little extra info will help prepare for unexpected results.

what has me kind of baffled is that most of the egr threads and topics are about a code 34. My code is a 55 which seems to be a california only ecu code.

SVX will post 1 code at a time. In other words, if you have a code 55 and a code 34, it will post the 5 long/5 short blinks, and then stop blinking for a moment, and then post the 3 long/4 short blinks. I dont know how many it will store, the most ive ever had at any one time is 2 codes, but it will post them 1 after the other.

The code number is really irrelevant as codes are not meant to indicate a specific part requires replacement. Codes indicate that there is a problem in a specific area. The ECU has no idea whether your sensor is bad or unplugged.

What exactly is the code's description? Not many of us know them by heart and expecting all of us trying to help to go running off to another page to look it up isn't helping your cause.

I didnt expect anyone to go running off to look up the code for me

but more specificly it is "EGR gas temperature sensor (CAL.)" directly from svx-iw

Basically it's all the same. The ECU commands the EGR vacuum solenoid to allow vacuum flow to the EGR valve. In turn, the valve opens, allowing exhaust gas to flow to the intake manifold. As the exhaust gas approaches the intake manifold there is a small temp sensor. When the gas is flowing the ECU expects the temp sensor to register a temp increase. If it doesn't, it sets the code.

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to determine why the sensor cannot show a temp increase to the ECU.

ok, what year engine is the new one? You have a 94 ECU in the car. If your engine is a 92 you do not have an EGR temp sensor and you need to transfer it over to the new engine. Problem is, the 92 wiring on the engine does not have the connector for the sensor so it doesn't look like anything is missing. So to make a long story short, you need to do one of two things...

1. Change your 94 ECU out fior a 92... easy way
2. Tear your wiring harness off of your 94 motor with the EGR temp sensor connector and transfer it onto the 92 engine and put the temp sensor into it's location on the intake manifold

Well i need the car to pass inspection so i guess my options come down to removing the check engine bulb or some where finding a cheap 92 ecu. The $200 ecu's on ebay wont cut it. The last thing I want to do is tear into the wiring harness for something this tiny.
