How would our Subarus or an SVX or a B9 would do in this contest?
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...q=Audi+Quattro
I have tried the SVX on the very steep hill with wet snow and ice, it was doing okay with performance all season tires. I ain't sure about this one...

Lets see a new Outback with some Blizzaks... I'd be money it would out perform the Audi. As for the SVX... I don't think it would have the clearence.

In order for the svx to be able to do well in that, Id have to say it needs a 5 speed with 50/50 ratio and the LSD. The subaru would make it up that hill just as easy as the audi did, I think. In order to test which was better, You would need a steeper slope
Unless of course, im wrong. In that case, ignore everything I said and imagine if the mountian were covered in cream cheese instead of snow.

Funny that there wasn't a Subaru in the comparison... probably would have made the Audi look bad.
I have taken mine up a longer, and from looks of it, steeper hill. It was covered in over a foot of fresh snow and even with the fairly worn out all seasons, the SVX had no trouble at all. The hardest part was just trying to see through all the snow flying over the hood as the SVX acted like a snow plow.

with our 70/30 I don't think we'd get too far.

That's our differential split right? 90/10 - 70/30 depending on traction/throttle/etc..

It looked riged to me, looked like the others failed in large part due to poor driving tecnique just lift throttle and then try to accellerate on a hill, then stuck. The Audi made a nice smooth pass all the way up.

I'd like to challenge that hill with my SVX:
- 5spd (50/50) - Dunlop Graspic DS-1 - Ground control coilovers cranked to max clearance I was doing some "field racing" at my dad's place over the weekend. He made a track for racing old snowmobiles and once they were done racing we took the SVX's out to tear up the track!

Nice video. But did they all have the same brand of tires? Did they all have autos or manuals? What was the speed they reached before hitting the base of the hill? I was watching without sound, so maybe they covered all that.
A lot of hill climbing is technique. What gets most people stuck in an automatic is that they don't manually select and hold a gear such as first or second. Or in a manual they try to climb a hill in only in first. For example, I have a '93 Legacy Turbo with 17in Toyo Proxes. We recently had a snow storm here in Lancaster PA. I was out at about 11pm or so and was coming up a steep but short hill with about 4in of snow. My car doesn't corner well in the snow. So after a slow 90 degree turn onto the hill, I only was doing about 10-15mph in first, and I got stuck halfway up with wheels spinning. I stopped and restarted at the mid point of the slope and spun the wheels a bit in first then grabbed second and it took right off up the hill. The higher the gear, the slower the wheels spin, allowing the tires to regain traction. Another example: I used to drive a '03 Chevy Express cargo van for work. It had no weight in the back. I was out in a snow storm with 3+ inches of unplowed snow on the roads. The van had worn snow tires in the back with a smoothed center tread line. I was going up hills that cars and 4x2 pickup trucks didn't want to go up. I just kept going up, keeping my foot on the gas with the truck between first and second gear, and my other foot tapping the brake to slow the rear wheels down and straighten the van and keep traction. I two footed it all the way! It was so much fun watching all the people skid down the hill wondering how I was coming up! Last edited by Dr.Outback; 02-21-2006 at 05:26 PM. |
