3 cylinder shifts?

Quote:
At full throttle, the flat-six revs right to the solid red at 7000 rpm before shifting up, and although first-to-second and second-to-third shifts are smoothed by a shift-energy strategy that cuts fuel to three cylinders momentarily, the next ratio hooks up pretty quickly.
Read from an article on subarusvx.com. Is it true? during WOT shifts it cuts 3 cylinders?

From the first article on the same page of subarusvx.com

Quote:
Incidentally the engine brain controlled each cylinder bank independently and could momentarily shut one side down to lessen "shift shock" in hard acceleration.

OK, the quote here also explains why replacing my O2 sensors all of a sudden caused my shifting to be so smooth. I never mentioned that here cause I felt like it had to be some sort of coincidence and I would look like an idiot making a connection between the two.

But I swear, I replaced the O2 sensors, and my shifting became velvet smooth during normal driving. You can barely tell it's shifting. Before then, it would "grab" the next gear.

I read that a while back. I'm pretty sure it was discussed at length, at some point.

It only does the 3 cylinder shifts at WOT so dont see where it would affect everyday driving but cool cool, always something new... I think each of our cars have a little gremlin in them...

Correct. Here's the thread talking about the 3 cylinder shifts:

This is why when you keep just short of WOT you can feel a much greater pull into the next gear vs. just a quick shift at WOT. Feels kinda like a slingshot effect when you get it right. Problem is it is tricky to get your foot at the right point to do it every time.

Don't believe all, you read.

That article was written by an auto journalist, not by Subaru.

He got it wrong, the shift between the gear changes only uses the Torque Control to retard the ign, while the change takes place. The cutting of the fuel to alternate cylinders is only done, on a cold start up, when the idle speed is high. When you pull it into D or R it cuts the fuel to alternate cylinders, to lessen the shock that would happen.

If you read the article, he says that the TCU senses the wheel spin, through the wheel sensors. This has lead to the misconception that the ABS sensors are doing the job. Wrong also.

Harvey.
