Transmission question?
Hey guys,
I'm sure this has been discussed several times in the past, but will any other transmissions work in a 92 SVX with little or no modifications? I am getting ready to replace, or rebuild, my tranny AGAIN and am trying find out what other options I may have. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Phil |

I'm right in the middle of the same problem. I am shopping for a 1997 Outback transmission with a 4.44:1 final drive and a 4.44:1 limited slip rear differential to match. The gurus here have told me it is a direct, plug/play swap. You can also do the same with the 4.11:1 box and diff from non-outback Legacies, Foresters, Imprezas, etc. There may be some years that aren't 100% compatible (bolt patterns?). 1997 seems to be the sweet spot, and the prices I've found are reasonable - $500 - 800 for the trans and $150 - 300 for the rear diff.
svxpert has a 4:44 box and diff available with very low miles. I'm interested in that but will have a hard time getting to NJ to get it. Look him up. |

The OBS transmission will fit but the SVX torque coverter has to be changed over. I am told it is not a big deal. I'm even consider getting a new one.

I just got done swapping a 4.11 trans and rear diff. from a 1996 Legacy 2.5l sedan into my 92 svx. This swap was very basic. Everything fits perfectly. The wiring harness is a direct plug-n-play. Switching the LSD carrier from my SVX diff into the Legacy 4.11 housing was also very easy. You will find that your speedometer will read about 10% high after the swap. I do a lot of highway driving, and would not reccomend the 4.44 gears if you like to cruise at high speeds. With the 4.11 gears 3000 rpm is about 72 mph. The shifts are good and solid
The trans and diff were taken from the same wrecked car. The yard charged me $650 for the pair. I'm really impressed with how quick the car now feels. Looking forward to drag-racing it against my wife's 2005 Outback XT. Good luck with finding a transmission!

Thanks joeaxial! I just found this transmission on ebay, any ideas if it would be compatible? Should I ask the seller any specific questions? I'm trying to learn, but am still not very familiar with transmissions specs.

Yes, that one will bolt right up, but sheesh! $2150 for the tranny PLUS a $1200 core charge PLUS $450 shipping, PLUS whatever it costs to ship the core back. Additionally, you'll need to swap in a compatible rear diff. That's easily over $4000 for a used tranny (not counting labor) which is about $1500 more than a rebuilt SVX unit goes for. (For that much, you could easily get a decent running SVX!) I've seen a number of SVX trannys in the $700-$1200 range on ebay, too.

I'm buying one of those with 25,000 miles on it for $525. The transmission pictured has 4.44 gears, meaning you will also need to find a rear differential with 4.44 gears, preferably one that was set up like that from the factory (auto Outback LTD, Legacy GTLTD, Forester S, 2000-2001 2.5rs). I found a 2001 2.5RS diff for $150 with 84k. With labor from a good shop, I'm looking at around $1500 back on the road.
Be very sure you want 4.44 gears. Your car will be much quicker but it will suck gas like a funny car. I have a 1 (one) mile commute to work, and we have a 4 cyl minivan for shuttling the kids, so I'm not sweating it. joeaxial did the responsible thing and put 4.11's in his. I'm off to the junkyards right now to check out the diff and the tranny. www.car-part.com is a great parts locator. I found my stuff within an hour of my zip code. |

At 72 mph, there is only a couple of hundred rpm's of differance between the 4.44s at 3000 rpm, and the 4.111s at 2777.49 rpm.
222.51 rpm differance! The BIG advantage to the 4.44s is their lower first and second ratios, giving much more torque in first(36%) and second(31%).
