Autocross Tire size...

Suddenly the 245/45s I'm running on the Bill-Stock ESP SVX aren't looking all that wide

ESP Camaro @ this year's SCCA Nationals event....

Chike,
yeah, it will be interesting to see where the "knee in the curve" is regarding how wide a tire to go with on the SVX. The 245/45s are definitely an improvement over the 225/50s. That Camaro has to be running at least 315/45s!

I think I'll be running 245/45/16's next year when I autox - however, I will stay on a true street tire, rather than R compound.

Our cars are similar in weight & weight distn to the new V8 Audi S4 which uses a 235 sized tire. The R34 Skyline Z-tune that makes over 500 awhp and weighs in at ~3500lbs, has 265 sized tires. Personally, I feel a tire size around 245-265 would probably be the biggest we'll want to go on our cars.

I don't 'officially' autocross, but I've been running 245s on the last two sets I've owned. If wider tires were available from a reputable manufacturer, I'd be running 'em. My previous Michelins Sport Cups were really wide. My current Bridgestone Potenzas are noticeably narrower. They're both 245s, but Michelins tend to run wide. ...so, for those of you who want the extra inch, go Michelin.

Hoosiers are wider as well it seems in most cases. Bill Dave is gonna talk $$$ about those 275s. Paul thinks he can mount 'em on the stock rims!!!

'bout time!

p.s. I think Paul might be right....seems to me that I've read that the stock rims are either 7.5 or 7.75 inches wide. I'm really interested in how thick of a spacer you'll have to use to keep the inside "face" of the tires off of the inner wheel well. Talk about a "nasty" looking RACE CAR!!!

There was a post by Mychailo a little while back when he measured the width of the stock rims - he found they were in fact 7.75" wide.

What inner wheel well . I'm thinking that since a 255 will fit w/o rubbing that we shouldn't need much more than about 3/8, maybe 1/2 inches. Now as for the outer fender. Any ideas on good suppliers for fender flares?

I have two 7/32" (~5.5mm) wheel spacers that'll fit our cars. If you want them, their yours for the cost of shipping.

I used them only once on my car, but it caused the outside edge of my tire to hit the wheel well when I took corners. I probably could have made them work with a little more -ve camber...

Guess I should have said "strut"
Plenty of suppliers of flares out there ... try J.C. Whitney

Actually, Porter said they were 7.75". I just made a note of it in my SVX database. :-) I've often thought about putting 245/40-17s on my SVX. I almost bought a set of 17x8.5 Rota Slipstreams to do it. I've been too worried about the extra weight of wide tires and wheels affecting handling and acceleration during daily driving.

Thanks. I wasn't aware that it was Porter who originally mentioned it.

Would 245/40/17's fit on the 17x8" Rota Torques with no rubbing issues on the SVX? I'm not sure of the offset of the Torques, but I really like that wheel design. I may get a set in gun metal grey next year...
