Day 16 -- JUST SHOOT ME!!!!

After nearly two weeks of "diagnosis" (re-doing the gaskets in the Valve Body, checking dropping resistors and TPSes and installing a new solenoid pack), the determination was made today that, "it's internal. It's going to have to come back out."

I'm tired, I'm pissed and I want my car.

Some people just don't understand the symbiotic relationship between a die-hard SVXer and his car.

I'm going away for a little while now. Don't wait up for me.

At this point, and since they installed a Legacy transmission in the car (having to modify wiring harnesses and such, if I remembercorrectly), I have serious questions concerning their competency.

Randy. Who (in the world - I assume) is doing this job anyway? I'd like to know, you know, for further reference and stuff.

These weren't the guys who *installed* the Legacy tranny. They DID rebuild it and put it back in, but the only wiring modifications they did in doing so was to wire the solenoid pack together (like the Legacy pack). The Legacy and SVX solenoid packs are identical except for the fact the the Legacy pack is wired together and the SVX pack is wired in sequence.

Comments like "I have serious questions concerning their competency" is not what I need right now. Believe me, those "questions" have gone through my mind, non-stop since day three.

I suppose I'll have to spell it out --- I'M FISHING FOR SYMPATHY, since I can do little else to move the process along. But, this will definitely be my last visit at this shop unless two things happen: They charge me absolutely nothing for the time the car has been there AND they offer to reimburse me for any portion of my rental car. I imagine the combination of those two elements coming together are about as possible as Subaru introducing another "from the ground up" sports/luxury vehicle.

I'll tell you in private. Although they've generally been a pain in the butt, they came through when it counted. If not for them, I'd never had made it to the Vermont meet. That, and the fact that they were the ones that re-built it, so they should be responsible for fixing it.

BTW, I pulled my bill from this re-build last night. Since it has turned out to be an internal problem and not an electrical problem, it may still be warranteed. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Thank you, Doug. That means A WHOLE LOT coming from a guy who suffered through eleven re-builds. I appreciate it.

No? Drat, musta missed.

Seriously, hope you get it resolved soon. Hate to see you so distressed.

Letter writing help?

Hey Randy....

If you need any help firing off a letter to these guys demanding reimbursement and whatever else you want, let me know. If I can get myself a new engine, I know I can help a good guy like yourself.

My letter is in my locker if you want to read it and maybe start formulating your own plan of attack. I know, you just want your car back right now. I didn't start writing until I had my car towed out of there. Then I went on the attack. If I can win, you can too!

Hang in there buddy,

Jeff

You already know I'm sympathetic.

So sue me for posting my own thoughts.

Cripes, somebody give Randy a hug before he kills somebody.

I'm sorry you're having a hard time of this. Apparently it's just a weird problem that's hard to nail down. I've been on their side of this situation before.

Since you're looking for sympathy, try showing them some. You defend them as competent, so you don't think they're effing the whole thing up. I know it's rough being without the car and not knowing what's going on, but sit tight and let them take care of it.

Being a patient customer has more often gotten me good service than being an angry customer.

come on pockets.....???

16 days is a little above and beyond the realm of patience. that is potentially 128 hours!! these guys kill me how long they just sit on jobs. they probably got some guy looking at when he has done all the other jobs where the problem is easily fixed and they can immediately charge their customer. warranty work or troubleshooting is always last on the list of things to-do. randy has a right to be frustrated. the painful part is there is nothing you can do?! you have to wait on them.....and wait on them..... it sucks and unfortunately i am about to be in the same boat with my cv axle and nagging oil leak. it is not even a big deal for me anymore that my car has problems, the problem comes when people dont know what the hell they are doing or when they take forever doing it.

ok i am done. randy sorry and good luck, unfortunately you may need it.

A) Yes, I know you're sympathetic.

B) You'll be hearing from my attorney.

C) Yes, dammit, I need a hug and I wanna kill somebody.

D) Not nearly as sorry as I am, and I've been there too.

E) I ran out of sympathy the last time they had my car for 24 days to diagnose a faulty TPS. I don't really know that they're competent, but, they "seem" to be sincerely trying, so, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. I just want to be kept informed. They tell me they're doing something to solve the problem, yet, they don't let me know it didn't and that its going to be "we don't know how many more days" before they try something else. I think the fact that they are holding a 2,100.00 boat anchor (aka Legacy Rebuild) and a 1,200.00 sludge box that has returned now for the second time, entitles me to a little communication. They should know me well enough by now to know that I can't just "sit tight" especially with the meter running on a rental car.

F) I mask my anger in disappointment. I haven't blown up at anyone, but, I don't hide my disappointment. The last time I picked up my car after the similar ordeal (on the way to Reading II), the tech commended me on my patience and told me, "I would've been screaming." It just amazes me that they can pull a transmission, rebuild it and replace it in four days, but, it usually takes three weeks to diagnose a problem. Call me picky.

Also, I apologize for using this forum to blow off steam, and I appreciate the ability to do it. However it is about the only thing that keeps me sane during these ordeals, and keeps me from taking it out on my family and the dog.

Yes, I'm obsessed. Yes, I admit I go overboard. No, I don't think its "right." But, it is the way it is. As I've said before, this isn't a "car owner" dropping off his car at the repair shop. This relationship has become symbiotic.

If only one good thing has come out of this second epic, I think I finally found a name for my car.

Significant Technical Input
I wish I could say something wise and supportive here, but you know me too well to expect that.

I was thinking of tossing my two bits in here but they wouldn't help. I just hope all goes well soon.

We called around today, here's what we found:

Our price, using aftermarket rebuilder (I don't have any say in the pricing) - $3241 12/12 Warranty, $3658 12mo/Unlimited miles. Add $288 labor + fluid.

Called Bachman Subaru - $3333.10 12/12 Warranty + $288 labor + fluid. I wasn't the one that called them so I don't know if that's a Subaru tranny or not. The reason I wonder is SVXParts lists the trans @ $4xxx.00. Next is why only a 12/12 warranty? Outside transmission or just dealer policy?

I've been able to figure out where the dealers send their cores, but I haven't been able to decipher who is rebuilding them. Maybe someday....

Don't apologise for venting your steam here. We know what it is like to have a relationship with your car. This is probably the only place you can talk to someone or at someone that will understand. I find myself feeling very bad for you, but I also find myself wondering when it may be me. I look around here and see one drop after another, and I wonder "who is next"? We all know what the weak points on our cars are, but we love them just the same, and maybe even more because we do not take them for granted. Seeing owners who care, is one of the great parts of being in "The Family" of owning this great and unique car. That part of caring makes it all the harder to sit by while the repairs are being done, and not being able to drive "Our Best Friend".

I extend a GET WELL SOON to you and your car - whatever the new name is.
