West Virginia 4.44 trans & diff swap meet! Saturday, April 23rd!

Ok, I spoke with Tom (Svxfiles) tonight who's still recovering from the exciting time he had at Reading over the weekend... j/k bud

It looks like we'll be doing the trans and rear diff swap (from a '97 Legacy Outback) on my SVX at his place on Saturday April 23rd. We'll start shortly after Tom gets off work at 2pm and work at least until sunset (~8pm), before finishing up Sunday am.

There'll be beer, laughter and of course a trans swap in progress. Feel free to let us know if you might be in the area and want to pop in for a beer or two...or three or four...heck just take the whole case and go home!

Thanks! You know on car-part.com I saw an '04 Forester XT 5spd on sale at a junk yard in NJ for $1000. That isn't a bad price for the strongest 5spd Subaru brings to the US...

Honestly, I don't know. But if I ever went to a 5spd, the Forester XT version would be the one I'd get...

What all would be involved in using the Forester XT 5spd?
Does it basicaly just bolt up, or is there a need for a lot of fabrication??

Shortest gearing offered by Subaru - 4.44's - takes the most stress off of the trans. Also, haven't heard any reports of people pushing well over 400 whp breaking a trans. This same is true for the 4.11 5spd in the '05 Legacy 2.5GT.

4.11 are short enough for the 5mt. 4.44 would be alittle out of hand with the shifting and gas mileage. plus there would not be enough of a gain in performance to balance it out. Just doesn't have the logic behind it. although I would prob be the 1st 4.44 5mt owner

Go for it! Honestly, the gas mileage will suck, but Subaru doesn't make any gears shorter than 4.44s! These are the most performance oriented you can ever get.

If you have to get another cable 5spd, get one from a '97-'99 Legacy Outback. To the best of my knowledge the gear ratio is 4.11, but the trans is supposed to be stronger than the one in an Impreza.
