Anyone lend a coil pack for diagnostics?

I have an intermittent misfire - following my stupidity in cleaning the cam covers with a pressure washer to find an oil leak!

I have doused everything in WD40, taken all the connectors off the coil packs and injectors, dried, WD40d etc and done the same to the amplifier.

I took the opportunity to chage the plugs (still on the originals at 107,000 miles as far as I know). I was surprised how easy this was - and at how cheap, £28 for a set of 6 - they must have made a mistake!!

Anyway, putting back the coil packs, I seem to have a hairline crack running the length of one and another area shows signs of tracking. If anyone has a spare coil pack (it's the longest length drivers side - I guess they're symmetrical) that I could loan to check whether this is the case before I fork out what I assume will be ££££££££££££££s, I would appreciate it. I will pay postage etc both ways.

Thanks in advance.

I bought a new coil last year, and was amazed how cheap they were, only 650skr or about £50

Lend-a-pack

Hi Tony

Your PM in-box is full!

If you get in touch with Pottsy, David Potts, he was making plans to go look at and take photos of my new car in Stroud near Bristol, it's nearby for him.

If he can take a coil off that car and post it to you, I will get the coil back from you at the JAE.

Have not heard from him in over a week, so he may be abroad again.

Joe

Smile Coiled and ready

OK Tony

If you manage contact, I will retrieve the coil at the show.

If you don't, I'll strip a coil off it myself and bring it with me. You can do your testing and post to me after if that suits.

Joe

Pottsy & Joe,

I have proved that it is the coil pack I suspected. Ran the engine to warm the packs up. Removed what I thought was the offending unit and sprayed it with Easy Start (I think) and waited til it dried. Put several coats on. Replaced it and the misfire was reduced substantially. Today, did the same and then wrapped insulating tape around it, followed by more easy start. Replaced after dry. No misfire at al.

So, take a deep breath, open the wallet and ask Subaru "How much do you want this time?"

So, thanks both for the offer of a loan part, but shan't need it now.

See you at the JAE, weather permitting!

Used parts from US

If the cost of the part from Subaru UK is serious, then you should consider using some of the US "Find-a-Part" systems.

Tried this with the UK, but SVXs so scarce, never a cheep back.

With the US, you get three, four, or more hits, reasonable prices.

Drawback is, postage and import duty [usually 10% plus vat of invoice price including shipping] can sometimes be as expensive as the item itself.

If the item is scarce, unavailable, or an arm and a leg from Subaru, try a search on this:
