Tranny may be going. Auto or 5-speed?

I was informed today that the cause of the thumping I've been hearing is my tranny. The tech said the fluid was discolored and burnt as well. Im guessing that a new transmission will be in my future. Do you guys reccomend getting a new auto or putting in a manual? For those of you that put in the manual, how reliable has it been? How much would an auto be? Thanks

Thumbs up Re: Tranny may be going. Auto or 5-speed?

See my post just a little way down from yours in this same 'General' section. The 4EAT is marvellous! I've been converted.

Well depending on what kind of dollars you have/are willing to spend, You could always be the first to put in the Sport Shift 5eat from the new Legacy Gt in an SVX

It'll hook up to the EG33, but if the trans is longer than the 4EAT(not sure), you'd have to get your driveshaft length adjusted. However, this would be pretty pricey, as you wouldn't find many '05 Subarus in junk yards yet!

Where is the best place to find an automatic tranny for an SVX? I don't want to put in an old beat up one. Do you guys reccomend going with an auto from a legacy for reliability?

Well I am no expert, but I am opinionated and angry at the world.

The new Legacy 5-spd A/T sounds preatty cool, and it should be able to handle our hp, but it's also new, and subaru has never had the best A/Ts.

When my 4spd died, I got it rebuilt, and $2000 later I still hate it. Whatever you do, don't get your OEM one replaced or rebuilt.

Several people on here have gotten WRX 5-speeds, and they seem to work great. That would probably be your best option. Fun, simple, and reliable.

I wonder if anyone has gotten a WRX 6-speed (STi).

Anyway, that's my two-cents.

In a word, no, I don't. The transmission is mostly the same, but the gear ratios are different and the SVX's 4EAT has beefier clutches. I know that the transfer clutch, at least, has two extra plates in the SVX application. The ratios in the diffs are different between the Legacy and SVX, too - so putting in a Legacy tranny means you'd have to get the rear diff from the same car as well.

And the SVX's tranny itself isn't the problem - it's just undercooled. If you put a Legacy (or Impreza) tranny in without improving the cooling, you're going to have the same problems.

So put in an SVX tranny, and put in an aftermarket cooler.
