steering woes

Bought my SVX the last day of December. Around late January the steering was making a knocking sound. So, figuring the fluid was low, added more just in case. Well, the fluid was a little low and yesterday(feb 16th) the knocking became more severe. Took car to the nearest cul de sac and made a left turn. the knocking is still there but this time the wheel was trying to forcibly turn itself back to straight. What is my problem. any help is great.

P.S. If the problem is really severe and needs professional help, i'm 4 turns and less than a mile away from nearest Subie dealership and garage.

Dont forget to mention that it makes no noise going in a straight line... only when turning... also that the knock sounds like its coming from the left front wheel.

You may have 2 problems. A leaking PS hose or rack and a worn out front axle. The cracking noise you hear might be from the axle. You can check it out. Turn the wheel all the way left and then back off some. Drive in a circle at slow speed and listen for the noise. Accellerate while holding the turn and see if the noise is louder. If it is, the cracks and pops you hear are coming from the front CV joint. Front axles are usually replaced in pairs. If you have an AWD SVX you may want to check that the RWD is working.

i went to the Subie dealership today and they said that it is most likely the axle. the right axle boot is in great condition and the left one is just there, not connected to anything. they quoted me a price of 550 for both axles from an sti impreza. WOW. Let's go tax refund.

My Svx was in the body shop the last week to get some work done, while it was there they were nice enough to put in a new axle for me only $135 . BTW The guy in charge made the comment that it was the wierdest car he ever worked on.

Does this mean the SVX and STI use the same front axles?

Can anybody confirm this?

the subaru tech there at the dealership said that the axles would in fact work. he said that the 04 sti imprezas are using axle setups extreemely similar to that of an SVX. Might have even said something like the axles for the impreza sti were tested on the SVX to see if they would hold up to the stresses that the svx can impose on parts. No longer manufactured and they still go back to the "best car they made" for testing for the car that overthrew the SVX in the performance category. All that research leads to the impreza we know now.
