Tranny Band Adjustment; Where?

I have three very good procedures to do the "Brake Band Adjustment" on the transmission. All give a tightening torque and how many turns to back off. All say the adjustment nut is on the left side of the transmission. I even have a few pictures of it, close up.

Anyone know where the heck it is? Front or back of transmission? How high up? Can it be reached with tranny in the car? If so, from top via engine bay or from bottom between exhaust pipes? What needs to be dismantled? I could not even see it and from the pictures it should be pretty obvious.

I'm counting on you all!

Hi, Ken.

The brake band adjustment can be found on the left side of the transmission case, underneath the firewall. The only way you can reach it is through the engine bay, but it's a really, really tight fit.

Remember to adjust the band in small increments. This is frustrating to do, what with the adjuster's location, but you don't want to damage anything.

There's a cutaway diagram of the transmission in my locker at:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...ckets/6279.jpg

The brake band adjuster can be seen poking out of the top of the tranny, just behind the line I added to show where the differential and gearbox meet.

it's really hard to see even if you know where to look. here's some hints.

use a flashlight,
lean over the left (driver's side) fender,
it's on top of the transmission (behind the differential case), inboard of the starter,
it's just at the edge of what you can see,
I was never able to see it if my hand and a wrench were in there,
so wrenching has to be done by feel.

the routine to tighten to a torque value & back off is I believe an out of car procedure. I'd suggest tightening a half-turn then testing. If it needs more do it again. If you went to far, then back off. unless you have plenty of time to let it cool off, expect your hands to get quite warm.

Not saying this is best, just what I did more of less successfully a few months back, best of luck.

edit: I must type too slow - Mr Pockets has gone & beat me to the punch

trans band

It's an absolute bear to get to. To see it open the hood, and almost lay your head on the intake manifold, 5 inches away from the top and rearmost edge of the starter, behind the bell housing, on top of the transmission (on thedrivers side) you can just see it. Now get a good friend to close the hood on your neck so you dont have to adjust it. I picked my car up on the shops lift, removed the dipstick fill tube, and it still took forever. Make sure you dont back off the adjuster or it can fall apart inside requiring a total tear-down to fix it. Good luck, if you can pay a mechanic with very skinny arms and the patience of Job, it's mony well spent.

Adjusting the band.

It is not an easy job, but is a necessary job to keep the transmission working properly. Easier on RHD cars no brake booster on that side.

To adjust loosen off the lock nut, ensuring that the adjusting screw does not undo with it, then tighten the adjuster with a small spanner don't tighten it too tight just nipped up. Then loosen three full turns and lock the adjuster nut. This way the band is set with the right amount of clearance for the shift timing.

This is the way the book says to do it, only they say to tighten to 6.5 ft-lb. I don't think any body could fit a torque wrench in there, so just nip it up.

As every body has said don't back the adjusting screw off more than two turns other wise the band strut can fall off the adjusting screw.

Adjust it now save the transmission.

Harvey.

It's easiest to see and adjust once you remove the plastic intake tube between the MAF and the throttle body

Oh I took my starter out to do it. I just could not get my hands and 2 wrenches in there to do the work. I also made a 7mm hole through a 7/16 nut because I could not swing that square 7mm adjusting head.

You can turn the adjusting nut further if you remove the small hose that gets in the way. Just watch out for the sharp stuff to hit your hand on when the hose finally does come off.

You can actually do full turns now with this hose removed.

i found the easiest way to do it was by removing the intake boot and the starter.. of course, i think i blew 3rd and 4th gear, so it didn't really matter much..

is it possible that my brake band is so far out of adjustment that it completely lost 3rd and 4th??

Not really. More than likely it's either a weak/worn solenoid or worn seals letting fluid by.

I'm currently in the 2spd SVX club as well...soon to be 5spd club though.

It is possible to back the screw off so much that the nut comes off and you drop the screw into your tranny innards, leaving the car brakebandless and with a chunk of metal to throw around in the guts of the tranny, but, no big deal.

Here' s a diagram from the FSM
