Lets play 'Guess that loud disturbing noise"

OK...Got this 92 SVX thats been making this loud rattle sound since I got it around a month ago...It SOUNDS like a really loud heat shield(more then just slightly loose) or a really loose exhaust mount, but it ISN'T, and it seems to be coming from the passenger side engine compartment.. It is affected by the gas pedal, but will do it at any speed what so ever. (if you go over 90, it does it all the time, and loud). if I do a quick take off, it will always do it when the engine is rev'ing high. but even when I am being nice and light on the pedal, I mean old lady driving the car, I can be crusing at 45 and have it happen...I can rev the gas pedal for just a second, and it always goes away, maybe for like 2 or 3 seconds....Is it possible at ALL that its the powersteering pump? because I already know thats going, it whines when I start the car and its cold, and it shudders sometimes when pulling to a stop uphill and turning.

If not, what else could it be?

And I do have a slightly damaged auto tranny, maybe once every 3-4 days, it will slip in first when trying to get into second. and if I am not careful putting it in reverse, it thuds really bad, and it takes a long time to shift into reverse...so I dunno, whats wrong with my sweet baby of a car? The sound makes me feel like I'm driving a junker...thats just not right when your behind the wheel of an SVX

Rattle is possibly a Cat. Convertor... and yes your tranny is most likely going. If that shaking that you feel only happens when you turn, and it shales the whole car in a like, low audible rumble, it is most likely not your Power Steering pump, but the transfer clucthes in your tranny...

good luck.

I believe it is your primary muffler (resonator) have it removed by a local exhaust shop and replaced with a pipe.

I had the same prob and it was my Resonator. I had it removed and replaced with a straight pipe and there was no huge difference in the sound of it...
