Subaru Select Monitor "shared" buy

I'd like to get together 12 people to share the cost of a Subaru Select Monitor + the SVX adaptor. If you are not yet familiar with the item from Porter's thread, please read the following thread to see what the SSM can do:

It looks like the cost will be about $1200 including shipping. Its an expensive item, and shared ownership could get ugly if someone breaks it, but with only 12 owners, I think there will be a reduced chance of this happening, and if it were to happen, I'm willing to live with the $100 loss as long as I get to use it before it gets broken. :-) We would have to deal with shipping costs when the unit goes from one co-owner to another. I would suggest that when trading the unit around, whoever receives it would pay the shipping. We could also loan/rent it to non-owners if all the co-owners agree, but I would suggest that in this scenario, we make the non-owner agree to a "you break it, you buy it" policy. Anyhow, I figure the cost for the unit at 12 co-owners would be $100/person. So here is the sign-up for co-ownership. Cost is $100 to get in on it.

I would suggest that if a non owner wants to use it, they would have to get permission from whoever the owner that has it at the time and would be responsible for it. That way it would not be out of control. The owner may use it at a meet and let members use it, but it would be kept track of it and not just loan it out to anybody.

is this a regional buy? i have a few questions:

what happens if someone doesn't return it?
what happens if someone breaks it and doesn't pay for it?
what happens if someone breaks it and doesn't admit that they broke it?

i don't mind chipping in to buy it but i want to know what will happen if any of the above happens.

then again i guess i could bribe some subaru tech in atlanta to use one.....

Those are all good questions. I wasn't intending for it to be a regional buy. I would hope that among the people who pay $100/ea, they would not steal it or lie about breaking it or refuse to pay if they did break it. Nothing is guaranteed in that respect, but we can always try to make it less tempting to do those things. We could keep the buy to people who are well-known on the board. We could require name/address info. I'm all up for suggestions on this. Please chime in. I like the idea of having a central custodian. Earl is close to me, so I'm quite happy if Earl holds onto it. :-)

I'm investigating another source for the tool. Kerven's price is quite good but I'm asking around anyway.

Holy Jumping Jesus...

Either Kerven has the wrong part number or they sold their soul to the devil. I just checked with the exclusive US distributor for Subaru specialty tools (SPX KentMoore) and they're telling me a very different story.

The SelectMonitor2 kit is $1800. The SelectMonitor1 is no longer available and has been superceded by the 2.

The SVX cable kit (OBD1) is roughly $75.

The '97 and earlier All Models data cartridge (required to access the vehicle ECM) is $410.

That puts the total for the working unit at $2285 at zero markup.

If Kerven can get it for the price listed above, then my hat's off to them. Maybe they have an original SelectMonitor in stock or something.

I checked what I guess was the Select Monitor 1. I just used the part numbers that were in the SVX Service manual. I didnt check stock in the warehouses. I think we do have a Select Monitor 1 around here somewhere. I'll dig through some boxes later and see if i can find it.

Cool. The SSM1 is just as good for this purpose if you guys have one around. The SSM2 just gives more information for the new vehicles, extended diagnosis info and all kinds of electronic crap.
