I'd run it by my local garage and have them check the mounts if you're unsure. Any of the mounts can create a thump, although it seems the most often mentiond is the tranny mount. Pesonally I need the two engine mounts, they're not competely gone but they're sagging, cracked and oozing (and just my luck they're expensive too.)

ok this is how i checked, put it in first andleftit there, got up to about 25 let off the gas and letit coast down to about 15 or so and then touched the gas again and a huge THUMP. It comes from the middle of the car or so it sounds... Family issues make me short on cash so i dont need to take the car to the subie dealership for them to say 40 bucks to check it. So either i need advice on if the tranny mount is the problem or what... thankyou and advance, i want to order the part ahead of time then have them install it... that is why i am trying to determine what is wrong with mine.

I seem to remember a post from our Pres saying something about giving it a little gas from a stop in reverse to hear the sound that indicates a bad mount. Do a search or PM him. best of luck.

that is correct same sound then, just you are doing the same thing by using engine brakeing and acceleration, the tranny to my knowledge is shifting and when it does it makes a good thump... I guess it could only be the one tranny mount to my knowledge..humm more fun.

Sounds exactly like what happens with mine.....especially when Super Special Hoon Mode 2 is engaged.....ie, overtaking over the like.

A very noticeable "thunk" that feels like something big (and expensive) has just shifted and hit something equally expensive.

I got Subaru to check it out (with a focus on the mounts) and they gave it the ok...have never really been happy with their conclusion since my Camry (thrashed to hell and back, 191,000km, 4 owners) does not have anything remotely similar.

And the reverse thunk, I get that too: put in R, pause....THUNK.

Good luck with getting it fixed/remedied....I am going grey before my time!!

Beav,

I have a set of engine mounts from the engine I took out this summer. They got about 150K on them, standard equipment. Would you be interested? I am surprised they cost so much.

I think it is very difficult to see if the tranny mount is bad without taking it off the car. Mine was bad. The rubber had sheared at one side. No way to see that while it's all bolted up.

If you have a bar with a bend at the end you can pry up on the rear of the tranny and see if the mount separates. Also don't forget to check the torque mount behind the intake - #8 here: http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...category=410-A

Another cause of the reverse thunk could be the two rear diff mounts. If the rubber in them has deteriorated enough, it will allow the diff to move when shifting due to the torque. I'll try to post a link.

Just hope it turns grey instead of turning loose!

I have fly-away hair. I think it's all going to Capistrano!
