The engine sides are from sitting in the drivers seat. Like the the Air con is on the left hand side, the Power Steering pump is on the right hand side.

Yes you would think they would be from standing in front, looking at the engine. but that would be too logical.

Just to clarify this old picture and error ....the 2 sensors (red and blue) are "crank sensors" although the blue one is the same part # as the cam sensor on the lt. side cam area (#5). The #1 crank sensor can be replaced with a 93 Impreza crank sensor for much less $$$...the hold down bolt from the SVX doesn't go through its hole but holds it down from a side.

This is a pic of my former SVX's engine with the alternator removed. I've highlighted the crank angle sensor in red and the cam angle sensor in blue.



You should be able to get to them w/o removing the alternator, but you can eaily remove it to give yourself more room. Hopefully someone on this board can sell you one for cheap if you need to replace it (they run about $150 USD brand new).
