I think that is true.

This is the one you'll want if you get a turbo. I ran mine, before selling it, to 170,000 miles. I used Castrol Syntec, made sure the cooling system was kept up and basically had only a few problems -- oil pump, front axel boot, fuel injector, clutch. Mine was FWD, not AWD. Stay away from air suspension models unless it's been changed.
Wow! This is really REALLY good info. I never read anything like this...even at USMB (which I am sure it's there...somewhere). You say 'underneath the cylinder heads'. Does this mean inside the engine or on the lower side of the car? Did all turbo models (RX turbo, Legacy, etc) have this casting number....some underlined and some boxed? Or did it just apply to the XT Turbo? Good info! I know what else to look for when picking an older model turbo now. Thanks!

I've read other things that led me to believe there actually was a 90 XT somewhere in the world. My guess is they just stopped production in the US for that year but produced it for other markets.

Yes, no turbo on the 6, only the 4.

If memory serves, the 6 is a 2.6 litre, (no turbo available), the 4 is a 1.8 (both in turbo and non-turbo).

The casting number is on each cylinder head. You need to get under the car to read them, but once there, they're pretty obvious. I can't speak to any other vehicles but the XT. Mine had the latest upgrade -- number inside box -- because the original owner had the original heads both crack. On the turbo, I would regard this as perhaps the most critical thing to look for, assuming the car is good overall.

Huck!

As bad as I want that car.....I can't afford it now. Outback Sport is still in the shop and the cost fixing it is rising. Then I gotta finish work on the XT6. I've came so far on it and I don't want to give up. I feel like I've gotten somewhere until I read a mod list like for that XT Turbo.

That car is beautiful. I need an automatic though because I would do something stupid like add nitrous to that poor XT Turbo and I'll ruin the transmission. With an auto, I can high tail my car to someone in town to fix the auto up so I don't have to worry about the tranny anymore...only the engine.

On top of all of this, I want an SVX also. I hate being poor. Someone please buy this car and don't let some punk kid somewhere buy it and ruin it.

No question, XT-6. These are the coolest cars. Weighs NOTHING more than the 4 cylinder XT Turbo! and 40 more hp, 50 more torque! The XT-Turbo did 0-60 in about 10, the XT-6 in the high 7's with a manual, low 8's with the auto.

Reliability is excellent. They will leak oil from the crank seal at about 100k, however, but it's only about $40 to fix this with a timing belt change.

Use synthetic 10W-30 in these engines.

So:

Reliability: XT-6 1991 (better air suspension lines, some improvements...and compared to XT-6, the XT-Turbo is like glass...)
Performance: XT-6
Speed: XT-6 (heard about 126)
Steering: XT-6 (Cybrid system!)
Handling: XT-6
Comfort: XT-6 (best seats)
Cool digital dash: XT-Turbo (someone has to put that thing on an XT-6!)
Cool height control button for off road use: XT-Turbo (but the XT-Turbo had a very delicate system)
Luxury: XT-6 (everything but leather)
Power to weight ratio: XT-6 by a LONG shot.
Exterior design: XT-6 (nicer bumpers, fog lights, cool looking alloys that are 5 nut so can be easily changed)

So, basically, get an XT-6 from 1991 in mint condition...

Now, if only I could find one...

Good idea man.

For lots of XT info from a great group of people, as well as specs and such, including links, go here:

http://www.xt6.org/

Really cool stuff there...and you may be able to use WRX aftermarket suspension pieces on your XT6!

(Get a manual =-)

Hey, what's wrong with an auto? Besides the fact that they are slower and can be boring for some people?
