I'd go with the 50k from the dealer, but not based at all on the miles...

In my state, buying a car from a dealer comes with a 30 return policy (lemon law) giving you plenty of time to bring it to your own mechanic and go over it yourself plus research known problems with them (assuming it's your first) and so on.

I personally get suspicious of a private party with a laundry list of new parts and work done on the car. I start wondering what went wrong that they were trying to fix... couldn't and they're now trying to get out from under it while using the new parts as a reason to jack the price as high as possible (dealer vs private seller = NOT the same value usually). With a house, you renovate and update for the sake of inflating the price higher than your investment.... fixing a car before you sell usually doesn't get you your money back.

Lastly, from what I've seen these cars don't sell very quickly, meaning you can possibly buy the one from the dealer, find out it's a covered up POS bring it back and have the money to go get the other one that is quite possibly still sitting there..... and hopefully not have buyers remorse after finding out you were better off with the first one... in which case, buy both and sell one on Ebay

Lower miles. You can go through the car and have all of the fixes done and it is as good as the other one. May cost a little more, but you can't add a little maintenance money to the car and have less miles.

Yes, I'd buy both of them.

You know what you are getting and its important to have piece of mind.
Especially in a SVX.

In YOUR case, yes. But as I said, everyone vote from your own realistic situation. Some people may only be able to afford the list price of the cars and not be able to afford anything beyond that for a long time. The lower mile one may end up being a big risk they can't afford (just ask Dennis ), while the other one, assuming it maybe is being purchased from one of the Tom's, could actually be a better deal for that person.

But yes, for the collector with spare money in the bank, the lower miles is better for them. Espeically if they aren't even going to drive the thing.

Glad to see we are at 50/50, which I suspect is pretty honest with where our membership is at.

Of course that said, buying ANY SVX these days should come with the idea that you may have to pony up some more money at any time for unexpected surprises. The SVX can be a fantastic daily driver, single car you own. But no matter which one you buy, be prepared with the back up cash.

I personally chose the lower mileage.

That is because if it does have issues I can address them myself relatively easily. But that may not be everyone's situation. I have a customer who purchased a 100kmile SVX that has a host of issues that need to be addressed.

That would be too cruel. However, if she was driven regularly, but not too hard, had her fluids maintained with natural, not synthetic, she might last a long time.

Keep her garaged, out of the sun and she may age a lot better than most. Her suspension may squeak a little now and then on a rough road.

Even will high mileage and some years on her, she could still be a sweet ride...

You're right. As long as you take care of the paint and bodywork, along with the maintenance, 150K isn't too bad.

But by the time she gets to 300K, and a few more years down the road...



She still may make you glad you had her all those years.

Our cars are beautiful and sexy as you could want, just a little overweight... but we like the way they perform. Older and a little slower, but still turning us on every day
