Question another tranny question

I just noticed when I'm driving at a steady 50mph in D, the tach shows 1500-+
a couple and sometimes it reads about 2k.I have also noticed that at the same time the car sounds as though it is in to high a gear. Sort of a drone thru the exhaust even though the car has no noticeable shift problems and no cel.It has just started and I wonder if anyone has experienced this before.I'm guessing it's tranny related but may be something else altogether.Any help? Thanks dennis

You are cruising at 50 in 4th gear. When the rpms seem lower, the torque converter is locked forming a 1:1 or so ratio with the transmission (someone fact check the ratio).
When the rpms seem higher, the TC is not locked, usually due to it not attaining optimum operating temperature of 150F degrees or higher.

Re: another tranny question

so is this the start of a tc problem? I ask because i would think after driving for 5 miles or so it would be warmed up enough to lock up properly or does it take longer to reach temp? Does ambient temp play a part in this? Thanks dennis

Driving at higher speeds in certain weather can have effects on fluid temperatures, either lowering it slightly or delaying warm up.

If it has only begun to act like this in colder weather, I do not think it is the beginning of a problem but it certainly is always possible.

Re: another tranny question

If it does it often when it is fully warm and you are just cruising at one speed, I would say it is likely that your Throttle Posistion Sensor is dirty or bad.
