Smell that Smell

This smell just contaminates the air through the exhaust and perhaps the engine whenever I start it cold especially. It eventually fades in about two minutes but I have no idea how to stop it. It smells more contaminated than gas. Should I blow in the fuel lines?

Blow in the fuel lines?

When my engine leaked oil onto the exhaust the car had a burning-oily-rubber smell. When a line to the fuel filter loosened it smelled like, well... gas. ATF leaking from the trans or PS lines onto the header pipes seems to be another commom source of burning smells. See if you can track-down what exactly what you smell and where it's originating.

Sounds more like either a "on it's way out" temp sensor, or one of the cats.

What does this mean and how can I check? I don't want to be putting my car in danger by leaving this problem go. Where are these located?

Well, the easiest way is to check for trouble codes. Try the how to documents and check for engine trouble codes.
The cats I don't think throw a code, but the O2 sensors would, which are right there at the cats.
