It probably depends upon the store, but I have seen some people take them back with superficial damage, or purely cosmetic issues and get new stuff. My dad took back a torque wrench once and they replaced it (they are not supposed to replace torque wrenches). It all depends upon who is working.

I also saw an episode of one of those "reality-shop" shows where a guy torched a larger (1"?) open/box end wrench to bend it so that it would fit into a tight area. The 'head' shop guy scolded him for it, so he took it to Sears, and they replaced it - despite the obvious user neglect.

One or two at a time I could see them replacing for superficial reasons. Bringing a whole set up there and asking to have it replaced - I doubt it (unless there are physical problems with it).

This is all speculation, however...

I also wonder what tool SVXer95 prefers

I think you would only be able to trade for a similar tool. A socket for a socket, not a pile of sockets for a torque wrench, for example.

Ebay or your local pawn shop might be the best idea.
