Steam?

Ok so more problems maybe mith my cooling system...

I stop to get gas (car is running at normal temps) when I turn the car off I see steam/smoke coming from my driverside tirewell.

pop the hood and don't see any steam but when i check the coolant overflow tank it's half empty (was full yesterday)

car is fine (as far as i can tell from driving it)

any ideas??

Sounds more like the valve covers are leaking oil onto the exhaust pipe if it is coming from the fenderwell.

maybe your coolant is coming out at the bottom of yor overflow tank? there is a 90 degree hose barb attached the the overflow tank with the overflow hose on it. I heard this happen before and if this is the case , coolant leaks out from either the tube or fitting and gets sprayed on the valve covers and that will diffinitely give you steam from the drivers side well??

If by "full" you mean up to the filler neck, then it's actually overfilled and will force-out the excess through the overflow when the engine gets to operating temp. Half-full's about where it's supposed to be.

Don't drive so hard!

Actually mine does this but only when I'm at an auto-x event.

I think it may be wise to slow down and not drive so hard. The coolant level should not be changing that much. After a couple of warm up and cool down cycles the engine should be solid with coolant and no air. No matter how hot it gets the coolant should not be overflowing out of the expansion tank with solid water in the system. A head gasket leak will overflow the expansion tank. I have added Suabru coolant conditioner to my coolant in the hopes of helping with that problem.
