tranny problems
I have had my svx for almost 7 years now and my third transmission just went up. I have 109000 miles on the car and drive it mostly on the highway. My mechanic told me it will cost about $4200.00 to replace. What would you suggest I do? I was on the kinetic concept web site awhile back and thought I saw something about a recall of a certain set of 92 svx tranny's is that correct?

hey there, I saw you ask your question in the chatroom, but not until well after you had signed off. A $4200 transmission had better be the best one in the world. For that much you might as well put a five-speed in.

the suby dealer near my place, quoted me 3500 for the tranny replacement including labour. 2100 or so for tranny alone. Good luck

First off, I have concerns about the fact you state that the thrid tranny is going into your car! There is a problem. As far as a recall, no there is not a recall but there is the NHTSA, I think...they have a sigh that can point you in the right direction for a "discount" because of the most common SVX problem, tranny failure. As far as following through with that, I would not waste my time, the cost is worth the headache. If you use AAmco transmissions they seem to do a reputable job and come with what I hear to be the longest warranty. You need to have an aftermarket transmission fluid cooler done, there is a recall on the '92 SVX for the transmission filter, that is a must. I know that the dealerships charge an average of $4,000 for an installed tranmission with a dealer warranty. That is very expensive. You may be able to talk them into a deal because that should have been a recall item... I hear the dealer cost for a tranmission is $2,000. I don't beleive that. After the core I think they pay maybe $900. for a rebuilt! GOOD LUCK!

The only recall was to add the external filter. Who's your mechanic?
Ron.

Sounds to me like the folks keep installing transmissions without cleaning out the cooler. This time, have an aftermarket cooler put on. If the dealer won't do it, have someone at an independent shop do it (or, do it yourself). It may save you from having the 4th tranny done.
