tough decision...

Okay,

so I just heard back from Steve at Suby Specialties.

The car needs:

i. 4 new struts, complete. Apparently all the salty NJ winters have taken their toll on the car.

ii. new a/c compressor bearing. again, yay for salty winters.

iii. new air and fuel filters.

iv. engine oil and ATF change.

v. top-up of a/c coolant.

vi. rear axle bearings (wheel bearings).

Total cost to fix everything? Approximately 2k. Which is more money than I was really thinking of putting into it.

So the tough decision is, should I sell it, part it out, or grit my teeth, dig deep, and fix it?

Napa, you might have your car....

kmin.

How bad are your struts, are they blown? The only expensive part besides the struts is the wheel bearing which should be replaced, but the rest of the stuff seems pretty minor. If you want to keep your car you could keep the struts you have now, and have the guy/gal fix wheel bearing. Then you can always wait to fix the AC sence winter is on the way.

strut condition

sorry, should have clarified.

the rear strut mounts are gone; the springs are resting on the body now, apparently.

steve said that the front struts are on their way there too, another hard knock or two and they'll end up the same.

right now i'm leaning towards selling it. i already have another car that's running fine...

Reeeeeeeally?

I hope you mean compressor bearing. The condenser is a radiator with no moving parts (that I know of). It has no bearings.

You can save a buck or two by doing those filter and fluid changes yourself, and it might pay to quote-shop before deciding on a garage, but in the long run, only you know how much you like your SVX, and that's the only real factor to consider in determining whether or not it's worth the cost of repairs.

Unhappy last-ditch attempt

Well, after looking at all the pics that I took (some of which are in my locker), I've decided that I'm going to try and save Vanessa, unless someone offers to buy her from me. I mean, everything else runs great. The interior's fine, I even fixed the droopy visors (ok, at least the driver's side, I was too lazy to fix the other side since I never sit there), and it still is such a great car.

So I've put up an SOS in the for sale forum, which you can see here: http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...threadid=21071

So if anyone can help me find struts for cheap, or wheel bearings, that would be great. Or if you know of an svx sitting somewhere, that has a compressor bearing (honestly, i don't really know what that is, except that it's what the belt rides on/over) and won't be needing it anytime soon.

and dcarrb, if i could do those fluid and filter changes myself, i would. but i don't have the workspace for that, or the tools.

wish me luck, everyone!
kmin.
