Things that go Bump! in the day.....

Got a really hard bang on my car today. A lady reversing out from a one way access road mis-judged the width and banged into the back of my car where I was parked while collecting my daughter.

She hit me quite a thump, and the rear wing is folded up, rear bumper smashed, rear light in bits, and as the panel is pushed back a cm or so, must also be bent underneath, although the boot floor and chassis rail looks perfect.

Dread to think what the cost will be, as the parts will have to come from Japan.

She admitted liability, so her insurance will have to sort it. She gave herself a real fright, she was ashen faced and shaking like a leaf. I am glad that neither she nor Helen or myself were hurt, it was only material damage.

Sorry to see my ubermoter crumpled, but paradoxically glad we were in the SVX. Pretty sure if we were in the Honda Civic, it would have folded, and been driven a couple of meters with the impact, with the possibility of injury.

The SVX is a secure place to be!

Joe

So true! I also feel very confident driving my 11 month old around in one. Glad neither you nor your daughter were hurt.

Thumbs up

Thanks Chike.

If you have to be hit, better be in an SVX than in a lot of other lighter cars.

Weight costs at the pumps, but saves in the bumps.

car will probably be totaled
do not accept the resale value
demand the full repair value of the car, 6-9000 dollars would not be enough

i would guess probably 12k dollars in damages

Sorry to hear it Joe.

Must have been quite a bump to do that much damage. I hope you can get it repaired or replaced.

Good Luck.

Phil.

Thanks guys

I will have to have the damage repair estimated, and then wait until the other insurance sends an assessor.

The car could be totalled if they set a low enough value on it. A difficult problem for them, one of these cars has NEVER been sold in Ireland to the best of my knowledge. Hard for them to assess market value.

I will hold out for the total cost of repair, their driver was at fault, I was parked at the time.

It will also be expensive to get parts. Being JDM, the broken light assy has to come from Japan, English ones are different.

Stage Two

Thanks Nomad.

I will have to wait until the estimates are completed and the assessor/s get done before I row in and see if I need to help them seek out parts.

Just FYI:
The rear quarter panel is done in. Replacement is little short of a nightmare. The panel fits right up to roof level, so the bonded canopy glass and the bonded rear screen need to come out, with the possibility of glass breakage in that action.

I await with bated breath to see what the insurance "experts" suggest.

[ I am expecting them to take one look at the car with a dropped jaw and a WTF raised eyebrow!!]

Joe,
My condolences on your mishap. Luckily (if there is such thing in the SVX) all of my "thumps" have been in a front fender which is easily replaced and relatively inexpensive, as steel goes.

Here's hoping that they can fix her, and, barring that, that you'll garner enough from the settlement to get another.

Glad you and Helen went unharmed.

Ouch!

Joe,

Sorry to hear about your car, but glad to hear you all are OK.

Sounds like that lady was moving on....in reverse!

Keep us informed as to how the repairs are coming along.

Don

Exclamation Whoa there hoss....

I have not heard from Kaintuck and West Virginny in so long....

Where've you guys been? Thanks for the sympathy, and nice to hear from you after quite a while.

Will keep you posted all right, but it will be a few days before I know.

The young lady was flying low in reverse all right Don. She was reversing full belt while looking over her shoulder, and did not give full attention to the driver door mirror, where I was parked on the inside.

Helen and I just bounced into the seatbacks and head rests, not even a bruise.

The girl driving the Passat got a bad fright because of the severity of the hit, as she was not expecting it. Also, she was going so fast she thought she had hurt somebody. Glad it was a false alarm. She was ashen white and shaking like a leaf. I got her to calm down and relax a bit before she resumed her journey. The damage was only metal and plastic. If only all accidents could be so benign.

Joe
