No Tranny Filter?!

Hey, Just called this guy to order up a tranny filter for my car and do a change on it later this week. and he calls be back, says the SVX doesn't HAVE a Tranny filter. that it was never made with one, but you could for a time get an external one installed from subaru, but they werent selling it anymore either.

Is this crap and I should bonk him over the head for it, or is this guy right? Cause I dont want to bother having my fluid changed if there is a filter and its not changed. kind of no point.

The "program" filter was for 92's and (I think) 93's, but some with later models have had them put on. The part is currently "orderable" from Subaruparts.com -- Part #31099AA370

Here's a link to the Technical Service Bulletin. Print it out and take it to the mechanic.

Is that the Legacy filter kit Randy? I know that filter is the same for the SVX. The mounting bracket and is different but it will fit.

It is the SVX filter kit. Note part number in the TSB.

This was Subarus response to the faulty lock-up clutch facings. No recall to fix the problem, just a filter to catch the bits.

This would have to be the biggest damming fault that the SVX has had to contend with. IMHO the affected cars should have been recalled to rectify the fault, as Subaru would have had a good case against the gearbox supplier.

This was not done and the fault was covered up, to the detriment of the cars reputation. You can't help noticing the lack of any mention of this facing problem in the TSB. Even though it is only for the 92 to mid 93s when the facings were changed to fix the fault. They make a big point, of the back flushing of the radiator cooler, what did they think was hiding in there, that was not in the later models, that did not need the filter?

Harvey.

How do you know if you have the "Program Filter"?

I just recently bought my 92, and sometime in the next week it will be going in for a new tranny. If I don't have a filter, I guess I should get one to install with the new trans?

FYI: These filter kits are no longer available, according to my dealer. They checked all the warehouses they were connected to, and nobody carries them anymore. I bought mine from Phil, since he had an extra one.

Yes that's what Liberty Subaru said also. You have to give them the VIN and it's a one time deal and only if your SVX is listed for the "program". That is why I have been buying the Legacy kit for replacement filters. I would still try subaruparts for the SVX kit as they may be able to sell it.

I got my kit from subaruparts.com about 4 years ago. I didn't have to give them any info. They just shipped it to me when I ordered online. No questions asked.
