Burnt out...
I've had my 92 LS-L for less than a week now and the list of burnt out bulbs is growing longer everytime I turn around;
- Dash (cruise,fog) - Pass. Map Light - Outside Drivers Door Handle - Overhead Light Switches - Overhead Room Light - Reverse Lights I'm sure there are things that I don't yet know should be lit also... My question is this, Is this a product of the age of the car? Or is this a likely sign of an alternator that is overcharging or undercharging? Or did the previous owner run into an electric fence? Any other thoughts?

one time i thought my overhead light was burnt out, but someone pressed the button labeled "room" and it came on.
fact is, lights burn out. especially old ones. i find it odd that so many of yours have gone, while only one of mine is out (def). however, i did notice today that my front left parking light is dim, and i have never hit any fences. its just one of those things to be replaced. if this continues and is apparently breaking down, get it looked at. does the pass. door lock have a light too?

Re: Burnt out...
- Dash (cruise,fog) -- Do a quick search on "tiny bulb" dealer price is about 3 bucks I think. People have turned to radioshack for the bulbs but they are a little dimmer than the regular ones.
- Pass. Map Light -- Take a flat screwdriver and pop the light out. It's a standard size bulb - Outside Drivers Door Handle - Take a screwdriver and pop the plastic out. It's a 194 inside. - Overhead Light Switches -- Same small bulbs (you need to unscrew a few things. Pop both map lights out and you will see 2 screws - Overhead Room Light - Pop it out with screwdriver. standard size bulb you can get at an autostore - Reverse Lights 1156 and open the trunk, open the plastic cover and twist the inner most bulb holder.

Almost all those switch lights were burned out when I got my SVX. Also burned out were the shift indicator light by the shifter, the fog/heated mirror button lights as well as the power mirrors button light.

Dash lights shake out like there is no tomorrow. The failed ones do not look burnt - there is a break in filament, but the glass surface is not black or shiny. So it looks like they simply do not like being in a car. This applies to button lights and panel backlights. Roof light went bad on every Subaru I owned. On my SVX I've changed it twice already. I keep a spare one in my toolkit. With those it is a soldering problem - a wire from the bulb itself breaks loose from the metal cup. You can temporarily fix the light by simply touching it and turning it in the socket, but it will stop working again soon. Reverse lights are very seldomly on, they are probably OK - you may discover you have a bad ground or reverse switch on the tranny does not work. |
