Alternator New or Rebuilt?

Relatively soon, i plan on installing either a new subaru oem alternator or a rebuilt one. Which is the better more reliable way to go? Thanks

I had mine rebuilt and upgraded to 115 Amps. It cost $150 plus tax and comes with a one year warranty.

I had mine rebuilt for $125. The place that did mine (also solved Green1995SVX's Cavalier alternator eating problem) wouldn't do an upgrade b/c they said that not all the parts (tech talk my brain shut down for 1/2 of it) cannot be upgraded for the alt and that it will put a greater strain on these parts. I've also heard that with rebuilt alts you can get what you pay for. Most of the rep. shops actually use better than stock parts during the rebuild so in theory it'll hold up longer.

If I got one rebuilt I'd actually go to the starter/ alt shop myself rather than going through a mass place that you need to send your core into. At least this way they use your old one.

Not that I'm all that knowledgable about alts but I would suggest by what I was told that unless you need more amps for stuff your running then you'd probably make out better just getting it rebuilt at the stock amp level.

Find yourself a reputable rebuilder and have it done. Ask around to make sure you get a good one. That's the route I'll take if it ever happens to me.

If you want to go to the expense of an upgrade, I understand that Chuy's is the top banana in upgrading our alts. John Shotsky had his done a few years ago and I've never heard him give any negative feedback, and, believe me, if it were'nt right, we'd know it. He runs some heavy duty amps with his system (removed his spare to insert amps), so he needs the power.
